Oops of the Day

Baptism is a memorial ritual like the Lord’s Supper.  It is to remember and declare that you were saved some time in the past.   

Acts 20:7 – Acts 20:11  –  Exodus 20:8

Fact of the Day

No!  Only the sinless can enter heaven. God is sinless and cannot co-exist with sin.   

It takes only one sin to be a sinner.  So, if one sin was on one person in heaven, it would not be heaven.

Only the sinless can go to heaven.  How is that possible? The apostle Peter said your sins are all forgiven at baptism.  The apostle Paul said he  was baptized to wash away his sins.

Oops of the Day

You can keep the Lord’s Supper whichever day of the week you want and as often as you want.  When is not important as long as you keep it sometimes.

Acts 20:7 & 11  –  Exodus 20:8

Fact of the Day

No!  When we look at the original Greek of Acts 20,  the apostle Paul and his fellow Christians…

  1. MET (Greek is “a religious meeting”) on
  2. THE first day of the week (Greek is “each and every without exception”)
  3. TO  break bread (Greek is “in a religious sense”) 

Later that night, they “broke bread and ATE” (Greek here is different – metabolized).

The Law of Moses said the Jews had to “remember THE Sabbath day to keep it holy.” They understood “the” to mean each and every.

Surprise of the Day

Gallio, the Proconsul of Corinth and surrounding territory, was the brother of Seneca, the tutor of Nero.

Acts 18:9-17

Fact of the Day

When Paul first arrived in Corinth, he was afraid.  But God told him he would be safe.  Soon after, Gallio saved Paul from beatings, imprisonment and possibly even stoning when the Jews took him to court.  Instead, he threw the case out and threw the Jews out.  Then Paul stayed in Corinth a year and a half.  We wonder if they became friends.   A few years later when Paul stood before Nero for his first trial, did Gallio have anything to do with Paul’s release?   Did Gallio save Paul twice?

Berea, a town where Paul preached, was full of smart people who verified everything they were told and read, but that’s all.

Acts 17:10

Fact of the Day

Berea was a town at the foot of Mt. Olympus where the Greek god Jupiter and a lot of his “children” supposedly lived.  We wonder how many ever climbed the mountain and verified whether those gods were really there.  Do you think that’s why the Bereans wanted to check everything out and verify everything whenever anyone told them any new thing to believe?

The gospel had been taken to the world within 30 years of Jesus’ death.

Oops of the Day

Babies can be baptized. Cornelius’s entire household was baptized and it obviously included babies.

Acts 10:2 & 33 & 48

Fact of the Day

No!  Cornelius and all his household feared God.  When Peter arrived, Cornelius said, “We are all here before God to hear all that you have been commanded.”  Then Peter ordered them to baptized.  Babies cannot fear God nor can they hear (listen to intelligently) preaching nor can they obey a verbal order.

Only ordained ministers can baptize someone.

Acts 9:10-12,18

Fact of the Day

No!  The man who baptized the future apostle Paul was just a “disciple” (follower).

(In Afghanistan, they do it by telephone.  The prospect takes their phone to a pool or other body of water and calls the Christian man who will say the “holy words” over him.  The Christian takes his confession and records it, says,”I now baptize you in the name of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit.”  The prospect dips himself under water, the baptizer prayers for them, and, if safe, the new Christian takes a picture of himself or herself all wet.  The baptizer then sends the recording to all the other Afghan Christians.  [Usually it is not safe to take a photo].  And everyone rejoices.)

Oops of the Day

The apostles were ignorant, uneducated fishermen who associated with riff-raff.

Acts 4:13  –  Luke 5:7-10  –  Matthew 9:9

Fact of the Day

No!  That’s  what their enemies called them. They were raised Jews, so went to the local synagogue school.  At least four were business owners.  One was a tax collector.   Further, if they had been uneducated, how were they able to write such eloquent letters that became parts of the New Testament?

Fact of the Day

Look closely at the word – HYPO-CRIT or HYPO-CRITICAL  Hyper means overactive.  Hypo means under active.  A hypo-crit is someone who has no opinion about anything.  Nothing is truth. Nothing is right or wrong.  Nothing matters.  Just do what feels good.  It is also a word that is sometimes translated GODLESS (no God).
