OOPS OF THE DAY ~ MAY 6

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Only ordained ministers can baptize someone.

Acts 2:16 & 41

Fact of the Day

No!  Three thousands were baptized on the Day of Pentecost.  The 12 apostles would have had to baptize 250 people each.  At 20/hr (1 every 3 minutes), each would have had to baptize people without resting for 12.5 hours.  If they began at noon, they would have had to be baptizing people to or past midnight.  Surely some of those they baptized helped baptize others.  The 3000 were baptized “that day”. Further, the future apostle, Paul, was baptized only by “a certain disciple/follower”.

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Peter was the only one of the apostles to preach on the Day of Pentecost which was the first day of the Church’s existence.

Acts 2:14 & 15  –  Acts 2:6-11  – Acts 2:4  – Acts 2:37

Fact of the Day

No!

  1. Peter stood up with the “other” apostles.
  2. The crowd heard “them” speak.
  3. The countries represented that day spoke “12 languages”.
  4. They heard all the “apostles” speaking.
  5. Only Peter’s sermon is recorded, but at the end, the crowd asked all the “apostles” what they needed to do to be saved.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ May 3

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Jesus broke the sabbath, one of the Ten Commandmenrs of Moses.

Matthew 12:1-14  –  I Samuel 21:1-6  –  Hebrews 4:1-9

Fact of the Day

No!  The Jewish hierarchy following Jesus around to find an excuse to kill him found their excuse when Jesus broke the sabbath, one of the Ten Commandments traced back to Moses.

Other scriptures say people have to work hard to support their families and others.  BUT, they must stop and rest one day a week and make it “holy to the Lord’.  “Holy” means set apart (from the other days of the week when we are working for ourselves) to honor God.

1-If God had not made it a requirement to stop one day a week, many people would have worked hard year around – concentrating on themselves and not their creator and possibly ruining their health.

2-BUT, occasionally, a life and-death emergency arose that needed to be taken care of. To neglect that situation would have dishonored God. Jesus also gave the example of a child or oxen falling into a well on the sabbath.

  • David had been starving
  • A child fallen into a well could not long survive
  • An ox fallen into a well could not long survive
  • Jesus and his apostles were starving
  • Dropsy – extreme edema – can be fatal
  • Shriveled hands cause by Multiple Sclerosis or Stroke can be fatal.

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Surprise of the Day

After Peter denied even knowing Jesus during his trial, and after Jesus’ death and resurrection, he interrogated Peter about his love and loyalty to make sure Peter was never going to waver again.

John 21;15-17

Fact of the Day

No!  First, note that Jesus did not order him to repent.  And second, Jesus knew and knows everything, so did not have to find out anything.  He was building Peter up a little at a time.

The 1st time Peter said he loved Jesus, Jesus replied, “Okay, you can take care of the young-lamb Christians.”

The 2nd time, Jesus replied, “Good.  Then you can keep my sheep rounded up and together.”

The 3rd time, Jesus replied, “Good.  Now you can take care of all my sheep as a good shepherd.”

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ April 30

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Doubting Thomas deserves his reputation and is an example of what not to do.  He should have been ashamed of himself.  The other apostles believed Jesus had come back to life.  He was the only one who doubted.

John 20:24-25  –  John 11:16  –  Luke 24:10-11  –   Mark 16:14  –  John 20:19-20

Fact of the Day

No!  A couple of weeks earlier while in hiding on the other side of the Jordan, Jesus received word Lazarus was sick. Jesus decided to go to Bethany which was about 6 miles from Jerusalem.

The APOSTLES OBJECTED to going so close to Jerusalem since the priests had announced they were going to kill him.

BUT, THOMAS said, “Let us go so WE may DIE WITH HIM!”

Later, after Jesus’ resurrection, Mary Magdalene announced that he had come back to life, the APOSTLES SCOFFED at her FOOLISH TALK.

When Jesus finally appeared to the apostles (while Thomas was gone), Jesus had to show them the nail and side holes on his body.  Finally, chastised the APOSTLES for NOT BELIEVING.

BUT later, when Jesus appeared again and THOMAS bowed to him, he was the first of the apostles who CALLED JESUS GOD

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

The stone in front of Jesus’ burial cave was rolled away.

Matthew 28:2  –  Mark 16:4  –  Luke 24:2  –  Mark 9:26

Fact of the Day

No!  The word for “taken away” or “rolled away”  in Greek is “aero-menon” meaning it flew through the air.

SURPRISE OF THE DAY FOR APRIL 27

I WAS BAPTIZED 74 YEARS AGO TODAY APRIL27) in Dearborn, Michigan by Arnold Watson. I remember coming up out of the water and, even at age 11 (one week before turning 12) thinking,” I’m sinless” and with a vague after thought, “I wonder how long it will last.” I have always remembered that day as my RE-BIRTH DAY.

A lot has happened since then. Brother Watson returned to Texas and died there. Also his sweet wife and one of my Sunday School teachers, Ruby Mae.  I have lived through 6 wars and 10 presidents and several eclipses.

I have taught the gospel in person everywhere in the US I have lived, plus Korea, Canada, Sri Lanka, India, and last in Afghanistan. I went to Afghanistan when the T’ban were taking over to encourage the secret Christians there and to give my life for them if it ever came to that.

I have written books to inspire people to become Christians, and hope they have accomplished that somewhere. I have never doubted that my baptism was the most important thing I ever did in my life and have never regretted it,

And now I wait for my turn to go HOME.

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

All Jesus’ apostles fled and hid while Jesus was being crucified.  Only John was at the crucifixion. That’s another reason Jesus had to hand over the care of his mother to John.

Luke 23:46-49

Fact of the Day

No!  EVERYONE who knew Jesus and had followed him from Galilee, including the women, watched at a distance.  In the account, Luke did not reveal any names including the women – perhaps to protect their identities.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ APRIL 22

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Jesus asked the apostle John to take care of his mother after his death just because Joseph had died.

John 19:27 & 25  –  Matthew 27:56  –  Mark 15:40  –  Matthew 13:55  –  Mark 6:3

Fact of the Day

Yes & No!  Yes, Joseph had died.  But there was more to it than that.  Jesus had four brothers but they did not believe who Jesus was, meaning they also did not believe their own mother.  But John did believe and John was Jesus’ cousin.    It was natural for Mary to be more comforted with John because Salome, his mother, was Mary’s sister.
