OOPS OF THE DAY ~ APRIL 26

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

The stone in front of Jesus’ burial cave was rolled away.

Matthew 28:2  –  Mark 16:4  –  Luke 24:2  –  Mark 9:26

Fact of the Day

No!  The word for “taken away” or “rolled away”  in Greek is “aero-menon” meaning it flew through the air.

OOPS OF THE DAY FOR APRIL 25

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Jesus’ body was gently covered with a burial sheet (shroud) and placed in the tomb.

John 19:38-39  –  John 20:6 –  Luke 24:1

Fact of the Day

No!   Joseph and Nicodemus wrapped Jesus’ body in 75 pounds of spices intermingled with the wrapping strips.  As a result, his body probably looked double its normal size. Three days later at the empty tomb, Jesus had left behind what is often translated “burial cloths” but is from a Greek word meaning ‘burial wrappings”.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ April 24

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

All Jesus’ apostles fled and hid while Jesus was being crucified.  Only John was at the crucifixion. That’s another reason Jesus had to hand over the care of his mother to John.

Luke 23:46-49

Fact of the Day

No!  EVERYONE who knew Jesus and had followed him from Galilee, including the women, watched at a distance.  In the account, Luke did not reveal any names including the women – perhaps to protect their identities.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ APRIL 22

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Jesus asked the apostle John to take care of his mother after his death just because Joseph had died.

John 19:27 & 25  –  Matthew 27:56  –  Mark 15:40  –  Matthew 13:55  –  Mark 6:3

Fact of the Day

Yes & No!  Yes, Joseph had died.  But there was more to it than that.  Jesus had four brothers but they did not believe who Jesus was, meaning they also did not believe their own mother.  But John did believe and John was Jesus’ cousin.    It was natural for Mary to be more comforted with John because Salome, his mother, was Mary’s sister.

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

All of the prayer requests of Jesus were granted.

Hebrews 5:7 – Luke 22:39-46

Fact of the Day

No!  All his life the human side of Jesus had prayed with loud cries, to not have to go through the crucifixion,  Even at the last minutes in the Garden of Gethsemane, he prayed to not have to go through the terrible suffering on the cross,.  Each time,  his Father said No.

Oops of the Day

A dozen or so priests and temple soldiers went to arrest Jesus in Gethsemane.

John 18:3

Fact of the Day

No!  A cohort of Roman soldiers was with them.  A cohort was between 300 & 600 soldiers.  They knew who he was and that his miracles were real and were afraid of him.

SURPRISE OF THE DAY ~ APRIL 19

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Surprise of the Day

Twenty-five times in his life of Christ, John quoted Jesus as saying, “Truly, truly.”  The King James Version reads “Verily, verily.”  It seems silly to write it that way.

John 1:51; John 3:3 & 5 & 11  –  John 5:19  –  John 5:24-25  – John 35  –  John 6:26 & 32  –  John 6:47 & 53  –  John 8:34, 51 & 58  –  John 10:1 & 7 –  John 12:24  –  John 13:16  –  John 13:20-21  –  John 13:38 –  John 14:12  –  John 16:20 & 23  –  John 21:18

Fact of the Day

Remember, Jesus was the Way, the TRUTH, the Life.  He was saying, “I AM telling you the truth.  OTHERS will not.  You need to hear this.  Don’t believe everything people tell you.  Believe what I am telling you.  You can trust me because I AM TRUTH.”

“Verily.  Verily” or “Truly.   Truly” is literally “Amen. Amen.”  Today, we use this word when we are through praying as a form of “over and out” or of pressing the “send” button.

Going a little deeper still, this word is a transliteration of the Greek which, in turn, is a transliteration of the Hebrew and is unpronounceable.  But, for a reason.

Its root word is YHWH.  In Judges 13:18 “The angel of YHWH replied, “Why do you ask my name, seeing it is incomprehensible?”.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ APRIL 6

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

While Simon of Cyrene carried Jesus’ cross, Jesus walked along with him.

Mark  15:22 – Mark 14:65  –   15:16-19

Fact of the Day

No!  He seems to have collapsed after that.  He had just been beaten by fists of the priests.  Then soldiers beat him on his head and whip lashed his back so much, it was now pure raw meat.  Then the soldiers brought Jesus to Golgotha.  The word “brought” in Greek is “carried” such as “carried a bowl”.  Jesus was so weak, they had to carry him up the hill and keep him alive long enough to kill him.
