Saturday 12/30 ~ The Heavenly Promised Land

The scripture for today, December 29 (12/29), is Deuteronomy 12:29 as found in the Old Testament of the Bible:

Old Testament Survey-Cover-thumbnail“The Lord your God will cut off before you the nations you are about to invade and dispossess.”

Why would a good God drive people (the Amorite nations) from their own land so that other people (the Jews) could live there? Way back in Genesis 15, God promised Abraham that his descendants would possess the land he lived in as a wanderer, but first they would be enslaved in a foreign country some 400 years. During that time, they would multiply. Indeed, they did grow from 70 of Abraham’s grandchildren to over three million.

Then it would be time for his descendants to possess the land. Why so long in the future?  Verse 16 explains it: “For the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.” God always gives people plenty of time to repent and change.

The Jews did finally possess the Promised Land, but God warned them, “If you defile the land, it will vomit you out as it vomited out the nations that were before you” (Leviticus 18:28). Indeed, they did eventually defile the land with their own sins, so several centuries later, they were dispossessed and forced to go to Assyria and Babylon by their conquerors and their land was possessed by the Assyrians (today’s northern Iraq) and Babylonians (today’s southern Iraq). Yes, God keeps his promises ~ to both good and bad.

Today, regardless of the condition of the nation you live in on earth, look ahead to that even better promise of an even better land ~ that spiritual Promised Land ~ heaven. And it will be forever good.

Monday 12/24 ~Remember the ravens

The scripture for today, December 24 (12/24), is Luke 12:24 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

0-Joseph-Cover-Thumbnail“Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn, yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!”

In many nations right now, things are financially strained. Luxuries? No. To be able to live until tomorrow? Yes.

Which is more valuable? To impress men or impress God? A life dedicated to things impresses men. A life dedicated to doing good things impresses God.

I know of a group of believers in Jesus recently in an African country who had to flee soldiers who were after Christians. They had to run immediately upon sight of the soldiers. No time to pack anything. Just run.  Escape. Run. Escape.

To get to true safety, they had to walk a hundred miles. What did they eat?  Grass. Leaves from bushes. Tree roots. But they made it. They made it to safety and the loving, protective arms of other Christians.

Today, instead of a luxury, can you send the money to people in parts of the world who are struggling to stay alive because of their faith? Struggling to stay safe because they are Christians?

Consider the ravens.

PS ~ Those of you with children, and you cannot get them much for Christmas: Write IOU’s to them and put each one in a box. Wrap each with typing paper if you don’t have Christmas paper. Or even black-and-white newspapers. And with a red or green crayon, draw a ribbon on top. What’s on the IOU’s? “One hour of coloring with you.” “One hour of playing ball with you.” “Three hours of hiking with you.” “Two hours of baking cookies with you.” Give yourself for Christmas!

Monday 12/17 ~ Fight

The scripture for today, December 17 (12/17), is Revelation 12:17 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

00-PAUL COVER-Thumbnail-“Then the dragon [Satan] was enraged at the woman [the Church] and went off to make war against the rest of her offspring [Christians] ~ those who obey God’s commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus.”

Whose side are you on? Do have a hard time coming to terms with your own personality and drives? Are you one of those people who seem to be enraged all the time? You may have long ago given up on being able to change.  But you can direct your anger. If you want to be enraged at someone,  be angry at Satan. Go to war with Satan. Rage at everything he is doing. Lash out at everything he stands for.

Are you angry at the church or at God? Keep that energy and switch sides. Be a spiritual warrior, a Christian soldier of the Lord.

Have you tried and just cannot get rid of anger in your life? You may mellow in your old age, but that mellowness is a long way off. You have never experienced rage until you have understood Satan. He is enraged at you. He is enraged at anyone who loves God or good people. Go ahead. Get on God’s side, enroll in the army of the Lord, and use your anger against Satan.

Does it work? Paul said in 1st Timothy 1:13, “I was a violent man.” Yet, he converted thousands of people all over southern Europe, as he “fought the good fight”.

Saturday 12/15 ~Surely not!

The scripture for today, December 15 (12/15), is Hebrews 12:15 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

“See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.”

0-BK 7-ShadowOfDeath-Cover-new-ThumbnailReally?  Bitterness can cause us to miss the grace of God? Bitterness only causes trouble for yourself and others and defiles you. Bitterness comes from you thinking of yourself more highly than you ought (Romans 12:3), and forgetting that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Bitterness leads to either bullying or shunning and ends in broken relationships and a cancer of the heart. It can cost us our eternal salvation.

The opposite of bitterness is forgiveness. Forgiveness does not mean you condone what someone else has done. It means you let go of it and let God handle it. It means you wish the best for the offending person or situation. You can wish even the most hardened criminal will someday turn to God and turn his life around. How many times in your lifetime have you asked God to forgive you for the same things over and over?  God forgives you as you forgive others.

Forgiveness lifts weights off of you until you feel as though you could soar. Forgiveness takes the clouds away and brings back the sunshine. Forgiveness makes sure you do not miss the grace of God.

The Communion & the Concubine (guest post)

Communion and the Concubine

rape_of_concubine

What follows is adapted from my booklet, “Communion and the Concubine.”  If you’ve found the story in Judges 19 and 20 disturbing (and most have), I hope you will check out the booklet and find the story redeemed by how Christ is revealed in it.

***

Judges 19 contains one of the most horrific stories in scripture: a man and his concubine come to Gibeah in the territory of Benjamin. Hours later, they have no lodging, so a kindly old man puts them up in his home. That night, wicked men surround the old man’s home and shout, “Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him” (Judges 19:22). The old man implores the mob to abandon their wickedness but they refuse. To appease them, the traveler sends out his concubine, whom the mob rapes and abuses throughout the night (Judges 19:25). In the morning, the traveler finds his concubine dead, her hands stretched out toward the doorstep.

When the concubine’s master mustered the wherewithal to act, he did something as shocking as the gang rape itself: “he took a knife and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel” (Judges 19:29).

In Judges 20 we learn that the concubine’s master was a Levite, a priest of Israel. In this, we can see Jesus. Before the cross, Jesus held up the Passover loaf and said, “This is my body, given for you” (Luke 22:19). Then He broke it into twelve pieces and gave a piece to each of His disciples (as the man divided his concubine’s body between the 12 tribes).  By giving His body and blood, Jesus was acting as our priest. Through His death He brokered a new covenant in which He removed sin and imparted His own life to us: “This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world” (John 6:51). This is what communion symbolizes.

Judges ends rather darkly: “In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit” (Judges 21:25). During the time of the Judges, the Israelites lost the vision of the kingdom God had called them to be. God’s vision was sidelined by the pursuit of personal interests. But the breaking and parceling out of the concubine’s body unified the tribes of Israel.

Judges 20:1 says, “Then all the Israelites…came out as one man and assembled before the LORD in Mizpah.” This was the first time Israel experienced unity since the time of Joshua. Yet this was not a unity brought about by any leader, but by communion in the concubine.

David is often given credit for unifying the tribes during his reign. While David’s role is undeniable, it is doubtful if the unification of Israel would have occurred without the death of this nameless concubine generations earlier. She was the mustard seed, the least of all seeds, that fell in the ground and died. David’s kingdom grew from that seed (John 12:24; Matt. 13:31, 32).

Later, Judges 20 says, “All the people rose as one man” (Judges 20:8). This prefigures Christ’s resurrection. By breaking Jesus’s body, God destroyed the self- determination and hostility that marks the old man, Adam. Christ then rose as one New Man: “His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace, and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility” (Eph. 2:15, 16).

Paul says, “And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf” (1 Cor. 10:17). Communing with Christ causes us to participate in His death and resurrection. Through this communion we come into the union of the New Man. In Him we find a head and king. We no longer do as we see fit.

When thieves encounter you, they stop stealing and rise up to call you holy. When heartless ones encounter you, they stop being stingy and rise up to call you holy. When people with tempers encounter you, they stop being angry and rise up to call you holy. When the lazy encounter you, they get to work and rise up to call you holy. The whole world will rise up and call you holy someday. And in the meantime, my spirit, body, and soul will continually rise up and call you holy.

Thursday 12/12 ~ He has set eternity in our hearts

The scripture for today, December 13 (12/13), is Ecclesiastes 12:13 as found in the Old Testament of the Bible:

0-REV-Cover-No Logo-KINDLE-lg-thumbnail“Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.”

When the King James Version was published in the early 1600s, they italicized all words that were not in the original language of the Bible. The word “duty” above was not in the original. Translators inserted it to help us understand the original. But perhaps, in this case, it did not help. Fearing God is the whole of man ~ not our duty, but our essence.

Fearing the Lord is a gift. Isaiah 11:2 predicted regarding Jesus: “The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him ~

  • “…the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,”
  • “…the Spirit of counsel and of power,”
  • “…the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.”

Solomon had tried everything to find happiness, as he explained in his book of Ecclesiastes ~ Pleasure (ch. 2), hard work (ch. 3), advancement (ch. 4), riches (ch. 5). None brought him true happiness.  Eventually, he concluded that only one thing can bring that happiness deep down inside where no one and no situation in life can touch it ~ God. God is the whole of man ~ if we let Him be.

Why? Ecclesiastes 3:11 explains it richly: “He has also set eternity in the hearts of men.” Another way to view this is “There is a God-shaped emptiness in everyone’s heart.” Fill your mind with the Word of God. Then God will fill your heart and being, and make you feel complete.

My twin brother passed away last night

My twin brother, Kenneth Maddox, passed away last night.  He was 78 ~ same as me.  He served in the US Submarine Corps many years. He married a woman with three children and raised them as his own and they always called him “my daddy”.  He had requested that all his organs be donated.  He was a storyteller like our grandfather was and could keep everyone rolling in the aisles at his take on things.

My prayer for Monday

I lift up my heart to you, Jehovah God, in wonder and adoration. You are so powerful, yet you do not punish immediately You gave me a way out ~ the part of you that was Jesus. Always you are giving me second chances and third and tenth chances. You want to forgive. You long to forgive. You want to wash the dirt of our sins away. I think, if I do not ask forgiveness as soon as I do a wrong, I tend to forget it. How long my memory when others offend me, but short my memory when I offend you. Yet, you stay by me.  Sometimes sad. Sometimes relieved I finally figured out what my sins are. You are patience beyond understanding and I worship you.

Jesus, you left the safety of heaven to enter a body and be tempted like we are. You left the perfection of heaven to associate with hateful people in order to prove your love for us. You left the Source of Life in heaven to walk the earth so you could die in our place and free us from Satan.  We were sinning against you; we were your enemy, but you loved us anyway. We found it impossible to be perfect, so you lived that perfect life for us. We couldn’t pay the terrible price Satan demanded in order to free us, so you paid the blood price for us. I cannot begin to thank you. I will spend eternity trying.
