Goodness in every country on earth

The way you designed the trees is so much like the growth of my soul. We start out life as a little ball, so tiny and full of wonder. Then as toddlers, that tiny ball develops into a bud with just a touch of color peeking through. Finally, we open up in full bloom and our faith in you is so innocent and pure. Then we reach our teens and doubts creep in. One by one the sweet-smelling blossoms lose their colorful leaves. But, in young adulthood after we come out of our dares and doubts, we form into something else. The flower has turned into a miniature green fruit, a promise of things to come. In full adulthood the fruit becomes yellow or red or whatever it is supposed to be and adorns the branch it has grown from. In middle age we are plucked and become nourishment to others. Finally, in old age, the tiny seeds that fall from the fruit are buried once again, some day to start all over again as a little green ball, tiny and full of hope. May my life blossom the way you intended and, after I am gone, may the seeds I leave behind develop into a brand-new generation to carry on your work and your glory.

Thank you that I live in a free country to do whatever kind of work I desire to do, to live where I want, and worship you freely. And, thank you, for the other countries of the world. They may not have the freedoms I have, but many of them have opportunities not available here. And they live in areas full of so much ancient history, much of it having been lived out in your Bible. How exciting for them. There is something good in every country. I thank you for helping me not become arrogant and think my country is better than anyone else’s country. Thank you for opening my eyes.

From the night, you call forth light. From the soil you call forth a flower. My tears you turn into diamonds. My laughter you turn into mountains of love. My weariness you make be sweet peaceful rest before the dawn. My soul rises to meet yours, my heart flies to touch yours, my mind, my understanding soars to try to understand you. You are so great and I am so small. Yet you love me so. I do not deserve it, for I am sinful. You love me still. I worship you.

The sun is shining. It is warm and beautiful. I hear the birds and see the flowers, I feel your smile and touch a little bit of your glory. Good morning, God! Last night I slept and dreamed. I do not remember my dream because I make no effort to until it is too far faded from my memory. But I know it must have been a peaceful dream. I slept through the night in your arms of safety. I feared nothing. You gave me sweet rest. At last, the dawn has returned, I feel refreshed, and now you and I are ready for another day that will glorify you. Glorious day. Glorious God.

Righteous God in heaven, so far and yet so near. You made the rules so I wouldn’t hurt myself. No matter how hard I wanted you to change them, you refused to change. You are forever the same. My rock. My foundation, My wall of salvation. My sword of truth. My rainbow of love. You have clothed me with your perfection because I can never attain it. You have clothed me with your purity; this I can never accomplish either. You have clothed me with your majesty to rule with you somewhere in your realm some day; I could never have the wisdom or patience you do. You have given the earth to me and all that is in it to rule with you. You have granted me a canopy of stars over my head and a rainbow of delight to encircle my heart. I love you, my God.

I lift up my thanks to you for offering yourself on the altar of the world. I could not give enough sacrifices for my sins in a lifetime. I was completely incapable of setting myself free from Satan. So, you, the Law Giver and Enforcer set up a loop-hole for me. You offered yourself as a sacrifice to appease Sin, Satan, and death to free my soul from their hold. How can I thank you? I fall at your feet in deep gratitude . For I am nothing and you have loved me.

I praise you, Jehovah, for you are Truth. Without truth, I would exist in confusion. I would not know what to do and what to stay away from. I would not know which was left and which was right, which was up and which was down. I would be left wondering and wandering through life. And you always keep your promises. You do no hold back from making them. They give me courage to keep going in this world that Satan wants to take over. They give me courage to stand strong. Satan may win some skirmishes with me along the way, but you forgive them as though they never happened. Satan loses. And in the end, you will win the war and I will be there with you. Great day of overcoming.

Oh, Jesus, thank you for coming! You kept your promise! Your Father’s Will brought you back to life. You kept your promise. Your Spirit explains it all in your Bible. You kept your promise. Now, I have the hope of heaven. No, not the hope; I have the promise of heaven. Oh, glorious day of being in the joy of your presence every day throughout eternity. Eternity is beyond my comprehension, but I know it will be so. I know it!

The scripture for today, July 27 (7/27), is Luke 7:27 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

“This is the one about whom it is written: ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’ “

Jesus had a difficult task ahead of him. He had to prove to the world who he was while not scaring them to death with lightning strikes out of the sky or being a giant, or striking unbelievers dead. So, John the Baptizer announced his coming ahead of time, smoothing out the crooked roads in the hearts of people.

Do you know a dreamer who is struggling to accomplish something very important to them? Have they been in trying to overcome all the obstacles for weeks or months or years? Do you know anyone who is an obstacle for them? Can you say or do something to that obstacle in order to help smooth the way for the dreamer? Does this dreamer need something in their climb that you can provide for them? How about encouragement?

On the other hand, do you have a dream and sometimes slump into times of discouragement or depression? You can prepare “the way” for yourself. We all have our ups and downs. You know yourself better than anyone. You know best what you need to hear when you are down in order to lift you back up. Write yourself a letter. Tell yourself what you need to hear. Then put your letter away in preparation for one of your down times.

Life is hard. It is full of both promise and discouragement. Today, sit down and write yourself that letter. Then contact someone else for whom you can begin to prepare “the way.”

Deep into the mind of God

The scripture for today, July 26 (7/26), is John 7:26 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

“Here, he [Jesus] is speaking publicly [in the temple], and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Christ? But we know where this man is from; when the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from.”

These people standing around the temple lied to each other. They refused to believe in Jesus because they chose to disregard a scripture that all Jews knew about. They said no one would know where the Christ (the Messiah) would come from. But they did know. It was in their own scriptures ~ Micah 5:2

“But you, Bethlehem…out of you will come for me, the one who will be ruler over Israel.”

Are you sometimes like those people standing around in the temple? Do you sometimes make up your mind about something religious, and even if the Bible says something different, you refuse to acknowledge it? Does your ego sometimes get in the way? Or are you afraid of pressure from your friends?

As you read the Word of God, open wide your heart and mind. Walk the beautiful path that God has created for you ~ a path that leads you deep into the mind of your God.

Ah, my Lord, your love is as sweet as honey and tart as a lemon that becomes a tantalizing pie. Your love is as soothing as milk and comforting as macaroni. Your love is as fresh as peaches and as appetizing as fried chicken. Oh, my. If you had not made all the different kinds of foods, my understanding of your love would have been diminished. As your Apostle Paul told the Romans so long ago, if anyone wants to know what God is like, just look around. And I do. You are everywhere.

Thank you for summertime when the grass grows green, the flowers bloom in every color and competing only with the glorious rainbow. Thank you for white clouds bumping into each other against a deep blue sky. And for raindrops that slip down the sky and tumble into rivers, creeks and mud puddles. Thank you for potatoes and beets and carrots and radishes that play hide and seek with me under the ground until I find them. And thank you for corn and strawberries and green beans. And for trees that produce olives and avocados, peaches and pears. How I love summertime. Thank you, my Lord and Creator of all things good.

My Lord and God, steadily I climb toward you. You draw me like a magnet. You seem so much closer with each step. With one step I strive to have the kind of mercy for others you have for me. With another step I try to be more forgiving as you are to me. With yet another step I struggle to make time for others as you make time for me. Then there are the steps of purity, patience, pride and so many others that I dread to take because I am so weak to keep them in my life. Sometimes it is very hard to keep going. But you keep drawing me. Where I lack the strength, you reach out and say, “Take my hand. I will help you.” Keep drawing me toward you, Lord. Help me keep climbing and walking, climbing and walking, until at last I walk through the gates into heaven and see you as you are.

Thank you, God, for your Book divine, the Book wherein you pour out your heart to me. How you have agonized with all of us these past centuries and millenniums. At the same time, you have shared in the victory march of each Christian who overcomes an enemy of action, an enemy of attitude. You never stop tugging at my heart and mind. You keep saying through your Book, come to me. Come to me! I can give you strength. Thank you for being willing ~ no, anxious ~ to lift me up. How I adore and worship you.

Great beyond imagination

I adore you, God. I want to please you and spread your kingdom everywhere possible. Then greater and greater multitudes will rejoice in you and praise you. You are great beyond imagination. When my thoughts are about you, it is summer in my heart. There blossoms thoughts of your grace. There flow waters of life. There showers of blessings fall with gladness. There the gentle warm wind breathes wonder. There the sunshine of your love fills me with wonder.

Thank you for the church, that part of your kingdom that is on earth. When we, your family, get together, we are so full of joy. When we worship together, we are so full of kinship in our wonder of you. When we confess our sins to each other, we reach out and lift each other up. Your church is such a perfect way to keep us encouraged to stick with you all through life, no matter what Satan throws at us. Thank you for your church. You thought of everything. And so I worship you.

Glorious beyond description

Ah, my Lord God, you are my delight. Oh, to be together in your world. No, that’s not right. We are already together. You are in the air I breathe. You are in me, around me, above me. And more. You gave me your Word. You poured out your heart to me in it ~ sharing your laughter and tears, your Eternal Plan, your disappointments and victories, ups and downs. How you love me far beyond what I deserve or even comprehend. You are holy beyond imagination. You are glorious beyond description. You are the treasure in my heart.

Thank you for making the world incomplete so I could be happily busy. You left the buildings unbuilt, the flowers unplanted, the jewels uncut, the poems unwritten. On a higher plain, you left Satan unconquered, the kingdom unestablished, the blood ransom unmade. Then you materialized and became one of us. You set me to work to fight the foe together. You left me battles to pray for, souls for which to beseech you, sinners to bring to you for forgiveness. Thank you for the opportunities you gave me. And the honor.
