Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises
Oops of the Day
The reason the Jews worshipped idols so much and were enslaved so often in the book of Judges is because they needed a king and didn’t have one. It says so four times in Judges that there was no king.
Judges 17:6 – Judges 18:1 – Judges 19:1 – Judges 21:25 – Judges 8:22 & 33f – I Samuel 8:6-9
Fact of the Day
No! It does not say they had no king available to them, but that there was no king over them. I think a lot of people today interpret that as their needing the stability of a king. Well, once they did try to make Judge Gideon their king, but he refused because God was their true king. (The Bible always interprets itself.) He finally consented, but the point had been made. They would not let God be their king.
And, after over 400 years of this type of thinking, to make matters worse, they fired the last judge (Samuel) so they could have a king. What? Huh? Say again? They finally admitted it! They wanted a human king, not the all-powerful king, Maker of the universe, and lover of their souls. And God’s sad, sad reply to Samuel? “They have not rejected you. They have rejected me as their king.”
