Tuesday 12/26 ~ True & Enduring Honor

The scripture for today, December 26 (12/26), is John 12:26 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

00-PAUL COVER-Medium-“Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.”

Just where was Jesus when he was on earth saying this?  In a posh hotel in Jerusalem? Who was the Servant of servants serving?

Who or what are we servants to? Power in a workplace, club, congregation, neighborhood? Prestige in a community, an occupation, an organization? Self-indulgence of money, music, entertainment?

While we are pursuing things in life, is Jesus there with us? Are we doing what he would do? Let us be servants to the power of Jesus’ love, prestige in the eyes of God, self-indulgence in the joy of worshiping Him. In this only is there true and enduring honor.

The scripture for today, October 18 (10/18), is 2nd Corinthians 10:18 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

00-cover-kindle-medium-new“For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.”

Do you look at your life and decide some of your bad habits are not so bad, considering what some other people you know are doing? Do you look at your life and decide your lukewarmness in good works and spreading the gospel is not so bad, considering what most others around you are doing?

Jesus said you will receive only one reward, and you must choose it: (1) Being commended by other people, or (2) being commended by God. You can’t have both (Matthew 6:5; 18).

And that brings up how you judge other people. You may decide certain Christians you know are not pulling their load in your congregation, not doing their part. That may be a wrong judgment. They may be doing good works you will never know about. “Your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you” (Matthew 6:18a).

Have you taken your spiritual temperature lately?

How often do we praise God? Praise is more than thanking Him. Praise refers to God’s attributes. Let’s see what these words mean in the original Greek language of the New Testament:

 

Glory: magnificently beautiful
Wisdom: great understanding
Thanks: bestowed favor
Honor: great weight and power

God deserves all this from us. Some people think God is ugly, He doesn’t understand them, He is against them, and is for weaklings. Some even hate God and are repulsed by the idea of worshipping him. They just do not know God.

 Today, will you help someone know God?

While you are pursuing things in life, is Jesus there with you? Are you doing what he would do? Dare to be a servant only to the power of Jesus’ love, prestige only in the eyes of God, self-indulgence only in the joy of worshiping Him. In this only is there true and enduring honor.

The scripture for today, May 25 (5/25), is Galatians 5:25f as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.  Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.”

When someone is better than us in doing something, do we pick fights with them as punishment, or spread gossip about them in order to get others to quit respecting them?

Perhaps we don’t do this all the time.  But what about times when there is something we feel we are really good at, but another person not as talented gets the honor?  That’s when it’s hard to “keep in step with the Spirit.”

Whenever we envy someone, deep down we consider that person our enemy.  Jesus said, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:44-45a).

To many, loving our enemy is the most difficult command in the Bible.  Perhaps one way to love our “enemy” is to realize that Jesus loved his enemies.  Every time we sin, we become one of his enemies.  But Jesus keeps right on loving us, even when we don’t want to stop doing whatever we shouldn’t.

Jesus demonstrates the love of the Son of God.  And here he says, if we love our enemies, we are demonstrating what the sons of God do.  That is far more important than honor that goes to those we envy.  Leaving behind conceit makes it much easier to love everyone.
