SURPRISE OF THE DAY ~ October 28

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible...and a few surprises

Surprise of the Day

A WARNING TO FIVE GENERATIONS IN ONE PSALM

Psalm 78

Fact of the Day

  • Generation 1: “our fathers have told us” –our grandparents (v. 3)
Generation 2: “not conceal from their children” – our brothers and sisters. (v. 4a)
Generation 3: “tell to the generation to come” – our children (v. 4b )
Generation 4: “the children yet to he born”- our grandchildren (v. 6a)
Generation 5: “to their children” – our great grandchildren (v, 6b)

This is a warning that our inheritance could be taken away.  So, stand fast.  God had freed the Jewish slaves from Egypt, but…

1 – They kept the mentality of complaining slaves until, over 40 years wandering in the wilderness as nomads, they all died. (Generation 1)
2- They kept the mentality of children of slaves until, after God gave them a land to settle in, they complained again and the generation of the slave children all died. (Generation 2-3)
3- – Therefore, God takes away the throne of Jacob’s oldest son by his favorite wife – Joseph & Ephriam — and gives it to Judah, the oldest responsible son of Jacob’s hated wife.  (Generation 4-5)

Hmmmm.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ September 19

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

No one other than the high priest ever was allowed to enter the Holy of Holies of the Tabernacle or Temple.  Even then, he could only do so once a year.

Exodus 25:17-22  – Exodus 33:7-11  –  Leviticus 16  –  I Samuel 2:26  –  I Samuel 2:35  –  I Samuel 3:3-4 & 9  –  Hebrews 10:19-25

Fact of the Day

No!  God made the law, he can change it, and I think he did – once.  God made one exception to his Only-the-High-Priest rule and the Once-a-Year rule.  And that exception was with a little boy.

When the holy golden Ark of the Covenant between God and man was made some 450 years earlier,  they made a lid for it which God called the atonement cover.  It had two cherubim on it facing each other with their wings overshadowing the lid.  Before the holy Tabernacle of worship was erected, the ark was in a special tent for Moses and God told him, “There, above the cover between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the covenant law, I will meet with you and give you all my commands for the Israelites.”  And so, the Bible says,  There the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend…”  (Remember, the Holy Tabernacle of Worship had not been made yet and Aaron had not been made high priest yet).  Then, after listening to God,  “Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent.”

Now 400 years later we find little boy Samuel sleeping in the Holy of Holies (kind of like what Joshua had done.)  Really?  Are you sure?   “Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord” (holy Taberncale of Worship), but not just anywhere in the house of the Lord.   He was lying “Where the ark of God was…. and the Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” and spoke to the little boy a message to pass on to the High Priest.

Why would God do that?  That is another surprise for tomorrow!

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Samson, the strongest man in the world, was always making bad choices of women and showing off  his strength.

Judges 14:5-9  –  Judges 16:3  –  Judges 15:8  –  Judges 16:31

Fact of the Day

No!  Samson judged the Israelites for 20 years and there are only a few accounts of his strength.  Though smart, perhaps he realized he also had a temper problem.  So, he seems to have lived in the cleft of a rock (cave) in Etam in the hills above his home town of Zorah and judged from there until his final capture and ultimate death at the end of his 20 years.

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

The reason the Jews worshipped idols so much and were enslaved so often in the book of Judges is because they needed a king and didn’t have one.  It says so four times in Judges that there was no king.

Judges 17:6  –  Judges 18:1  –  Judges 19:1  –  Judges 21:25  –  Judges 8:22 & 33f  –  I Samuel 8:6-9

Fact of the Day

No!  It does not say they had no king available to them, but that there was no king over them.  I think a lot of people  today interpret that as their needing  the stability of a king.  Well, once they did try to make Judge Gideon their king, but he refused because God was their true king.   (The Bible always interprets itself.)   He finally consented, but the point had been made.  They would not let God be their king.

And, after over 400 years of this type of thinking, to make matters worse, they  fired the last judge (Samuel) so they could have a king.  What?  Huh?  Say again?   They finally admitted it!  They wanted a human king, not the all-powerful king, Maker of the universe, and lover of their souls.  And God’s sad, sad reply to Samuel?  “They have not rejected you.  They have rejected me as their king.”

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

The Jews were slaves only in Egypt, Babylon, and Assyria.

Genesis 15:13 –  Judges 3:8 & 14  –  Judges 4:2-3  –  Judges 6:1  –  Judges 10:8  _  Judges 13:1

Fact of the Day

No!  After they moved into their promised land as led by Joshua they kept worshiping the gods of the local pagans and ended up serving them a total of 59 years.

God told Abraham he would make a great nation of them, but first they will be slaves for 400 years. After they entered Abraham’s promised land….

  • 07 years  – Conquered evil Amorites
  • 08 years – Slaves to Mesopotamia
  • 40 years – Judge Othniel
  • 18 years – Slaves to Moab
  • 80 years – Judge Ehud
  • 01 year – Judge Shamgar
  • 20 years  – Slaves to Hazor
  • 40 years –  Judge Deborah
  • 07 years – Slaves to Midian
  • 40 years – Judge Gideon & King
  • 03 years – King  Abimelech
  • 23 years – Judge Tola
  • 22 years – Judge Jair
  • 18 years – Slaves to Philistine Ammonites
  • 06 year s– Judge Jephthah
  • 07 years – Judge Ibzan
  • 10 years – Judge Elon
  • 08 years – Judge Abdon
  • 40 years – Slaves to Philistines
  • 20 years – Judge Samson

418 YEARS

It took the Jews 400 years to get out of Egypt.  It took another 400 years to get Egypt out of the Jews.

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

After entering their Promised Land and settling there, the Jews stopped worshiping their idols and threw away their statues.

  2. Ashema – Orgies

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

There are some people in the world who are so pure and good, they are sinless. Plus, of course, the prophets and apostles were sinless.

I Peter 2:22  –  Hebrews 4:15  –  II Corinthians 5:21 –  Romans 3:23 – Ecclesiastes 7:20  –  I John 1:8

Fact of the Day

No!  Several Bible verses state Jesus was sinlessness  ~

  • “He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth”
  • “He wastempted in every point as we are, yet without sin”
  • “He who knew no sin was made to be sin for us.”

And the rest of the world?

  • “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”
  • “Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins”.
  • “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us”.

Jesus was the only one who never sinned.  Never.

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

It took just a minor miracle for the Israelites to cross the Jordan River and enter Canaan as conquerors compared with 40 years earlier when they had crossed the Red Sea to leave Egypt as slaves.  Further, it took more time and energy for the Israelites to cross the Red Sea while fleeing their slavery than it did when they finally crossed the Jordan River to enter their Promised Land.

Exodus 14:21 and 24 and 27  –  Joshua 3:15

Fact of the Day

No!  It took the two-to-three million Israelites just one night to cross the Red Sea.  That leaves people to believe they crossed at the narrowest point near today’s Suez Canal.  There, the Red Sea is approximately 9 miles across and 80 feet deep at the narrowest place and time of year.

Forty years later, they arrived at the Jordan River ready to conquer the Canaanites during flood stage.  At that time of year, the Jordan is some 2-3 miles across and nearly 100 feet deep.  A  much steeper incline from the shore on the east side and back up again at the shore on the west side would have been much more difficult to manage. But they all crossed in a day.

So strength and speed required of the people to cross the Red Sea and the Jordan River would have been similar.

The Son shall be called the Father

0000-BK 1-StarSong-Cover-new-MediumThe scripture for today, February 23 (2/23), is 1st John 2:23 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

“No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.”

This verse tells us the Son and Father are one. Isaiah 9:6 calls the child to be born both the Son and the Father and Mighty God. The Son gives birth to the Father; the Father gives birth to the Son. In other words, God is self-existent and one.

When you speak into a tape recorder and your voice then comes out of that machine for other people to hear, that doesn’t make you two.  You are still one; you have just chosen to put your voice in something where you can be heard by people away from you.  That tape recording is just another form of you. You can also put your voice and body in a movie. That doesn’t make two of you ~ one on the screen and one in your physical body. You are still one.

God is One, and yet he revealed a part of himself in a burning bush to Moses just like you revealed a part of yourself in the tape recorder or movie.  Does that mean there were two Gods ~ one in heaven and one in the bush?  No.  God can and has sometimes revealed himself in different ways. Remember how he walked with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden?

Some say, “If Jesus was God on earth, when he died, God was dead.”  No. That temporary body was dead, but God’s Spirit, God’s Soul, God’s being continued to live. Jesus, the Word of God, did not depend on a body to be alive.

Why would Jesus be called the Son of God, since he was not a son created in the literal way we have sons?  You have thoughts, and those thoughts have existed as long as you have.  But you still created those thoughts.  When your thoughts become hearable or seeable, people call that your “brainchild.”   In that same sense, Jesus was God’s “brainchild” ~ God’s thoughts in hearable and seeable form.

How was he the only begotten Son? God has only one Word ~ the Bible.  “In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God…All things were made through Him, and without Him, nothing was made that was made” (John 1:1-3).  When God spoke the world into existence, that was Jesus. Every time God spoke, that was Jesus.

Isaiah 9:6 says the Son shall be called Mighty God and Everlasting Father.  And so he was.  And so he is.
