OOPS OF THE DAY ~ MAY 1

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Surprise of the Day

After Peter denied even knowing Jesus during his trial, and after Jesus’ death and resurrection, he interrogated Peter about his love and loyalty to make sure Peter was never going to waver again.

John 21;15-17

Fact of the Day

No!  First, note that Jesus did not order him to repent.  And second, Jesus knew and knows everything, so did not have to find out anything.  He was building Peter up a little at a time.

The 1st time Peter said he loved Jesus, Jesus replied, “Okay, you can take care of the young-lamb Christians.”

The 2nd time, Jesus replied, “Good.  Then you can keep my sheep rounded up and together.”

The 3rd time, Jesus replied, “Good.  Now you can take care of all my sheep as a good shepherd.”

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ April 30

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Doubting Thomas deserves his reputation and is an example of what not to do.  He should have been ashamed of himself.  The other apostles believed Jesus had come back to life.  He was the only one who doubted.

John 20:24-25  –  John 11:16  –  Luke 24:10-11  –   Mark 16:14  –  John 20:19-20

Fact of the Day

No!  A couple of weeks earlier while in hiding on the other side of the Jordan, Jesus received word Lazarus was sick. Jesus decided to go to Bethany which was about 6 miles from Jerusalem.

The APOSTLES OBJECTED to going so close to Jerusalem since the priests had announced they were going to kill him.

BUT, THOMAS said, “Let us go so WE may DIE WITH HIM!”

Later, after Jesus’ resurrection, Mary Magdalene announced that he had come back to life, the APOSTLES SCOFFED at her FOOLISH TALK.

When Jesus finally appeared to the apostles (while Thomas was gone), Jesus had to show them the nail and side holes on his body.  Finally, chastised the APOSTLES for NOT BELIEVING.

BUT later, when Jesus appeared again and THOMAS bowed to him, he was the first of the apostles who CALLED JESUS GOD

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

The stone in front of Jesus’ burial cave was rolled away.

Matthew 28:2  –  Mark 16:4  –  Luke 24:2  –  Mark 9:26

Fact of the Day

No!  The word for “taken away” or “rolled away”  in Greek is “aero-menon” meaning it flew through the air.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ APRIL 22

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Jesus asked the apostle John to take care of his mother after his death just because Joseph had died.

John 19:27 & 25  –  Matthew 27:56  –  Mark 15:40  –  Matthew 13:55  –  Mark 6:3

Fact of the Day

Yes & No!  Yes, Joseph had died.  But there was more to it than that.  Jesus had four brothers but they did not believe who Jesus was, meaning they also did not believe their own mother.  But John did believe and John was Jesus’ cousin.    It was natural for Mary to be more comforted with John because Salome, his mother, was Mary’s sister.

SURPRISE OF THE DAY ~ APRIL 3

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Surprise of the Day

In 30 AD, the man carrying a pitcher of water who showed the apostles the upper room for Jesus’ last supper, could have been a Gibeonite.

Mark 14:12-16  – Joshua 9:1-27

Fact of the Day

Around 1500 BC, Joshua was punishing the pagans (who lived in their “promised land” before the Jews did) for worshipping idols and practicing human sacrifice.  Some Amorite tribesmen (the Gibeonites) tricked him, so instead of being killed, were made water carrier slaves forever.

SURPRISE OF THE DAY ~ March 31

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Surprise of the Day

The Creator re-created a man’s eyes?

John 1:1-4; 14  –  Matthew 15:30 – Matthew 8:2-3 – John 9:6

Fact of the Day

This man was born blind.  God made man from clay.  Jesus was the Creator (John 1:2).

Jesus healed the maimed, that meant he made arms and legs grow back. When Jesus healed leprosy, that meant he made healthy skin grow back.

When he formed the clay for the man’s eyes, was he making eyeballs for him?  Anophthalmia is a disease where a person is born without eyeballs.  About 1 in every 5,200 babies is born with this.

He will stop at nothing to make sure you last forever

The scripture for today, March 10 (3/10), is Colossians 3:10 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

0-HS-592 VersesExamined-COVER-Thumbnail“And have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.”

Did you ever make something with your hands, and it was your pride and joy?  Were you so proud of it that you would stop at nothing to take care of it and make sure it lasted forever? Yes, you had a few rules about its care. You had a few rules about who could touch it and who couldn’t. You had a few rules about whether it should be kept at high or low temperature and should or shouldn’t be exposed to water. You were its creator, and it was, in a sense, a part of you.

Do you resist knowing the Bible because you think of it as being full of rules from a God who doesn’t really like you and is just giving you a hard time so you can’t have any fun?

Think again. He made you. You are his pride and joy. He will stop at nothing to make sure you will last forever. He made a few rules for your daily maintenance.

He is your Creator. He loved you enough to make you, and you are a part of him. Now he wants to take care of you so you can last forever. Can you love him back ~ your Maker and the Lover of your soul?

Nestled in my heart

Rhoda Book Cover KINDLE-mediumWhat a powerful God you are. You speak and your words roar through the universe. You sing and your song echoes from star to star. You whisper and the wind swirls and makes the clouds bump lazily into each other. You sigh and I feel your Spirit within my soul.  Mighty and gentle. Tough and tender. Everywhere at once and nestled in my heart.

Oh, my. Forgive me when I judge others by myself. I was where they are once. Help me be patient with others and delight in their little bit of growth instead of their slow progress.

Thank you for cold, nippy mornings with the wind pounding on my cheeks, icy paths challenging my balance, and cabin fever when I stay indoors too much. And for rush-hour traffic and horns that honk and declare their presence on the road. Thank you for restless children and empty cupboards and flat tires. Thank you for a world that is not perfect so I can watch you work within it all to bring blessings and peace and wonder.
