OOPS OF THE DAY ~ MAY 6

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Only ordained ministers can baptize someone.

Acts 2:16 & 41

Fact of the Day

No!  Three thousands were baptized on the Day of Pentecost.  The 12 apostles would have had to baptize 250 people each.  At 20/hr (1 every 3 minutes), each would have had to baptize people without resting for 12.5 hours.  If they began at noon, they would have had to be baptizing people to or past midnight.  Surely some of those they baptized helped baptize others.  The 3000 were baptized “that day”. Further, the future apostle, Paul, was baptized only by “a certain disciple/follower”.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ May 5

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Peter was the only one of the apostles to preach on the Day of Pentecost which was the first day of the Church’s existence.

Acts 2:14 & 15  –  Acts 2:6-11  – Acts 2:4  – Acts 2:37

Fact of the Day

No!

  1. Peter stood up with the “other” apostles.
  2. The crowd heard “them” speak.
  3. The countries represented that day spoke “12 languages”.
  4. They heard all the “apostles” speaking.
  5. Only Peter’s sermon is recorded, but at the end, the crowd asked all the “apostles” what they needed to do to be saved.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ April 24

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

All Jesus’ apostles fled and hid while Jesus was being crucified.  Only John was at the crucifixion. That’s another reason Jesus had to hand over the care of his mother to John.

Luke 23:46-49

Fact of the Day

No!  EVERYONE who knew Jesus and had followed him from Galilee, including the women, watched at a distance.  In the account, Luke did not reveal any names including the women – perhaps to protect their identities.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ February 16

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

In the story of THE PRODIGAL SON, the older brother had every right to not forgive his younger and lazy brother who finally came home, but only after spending all their father’s money.

Luke 15:11-14 – Luke 15:22-25 – Luke 30-32

Fact of the Day

No!   It was much more than that.  It was jealousy, greed, and a desire for all vs nothing.

  1. As the oldest son, he was going to inherit their father’s entire estate.  Remember when his father told him, “All I have is yours”? And the younger son did not ask for his half of the inheritance; he just said his part.  All younger children got only token gifts.
  2. Yet the older son resented one little party given to his brother.
  3. Their father thought his youngest son was dead; the older son acted as though he wished his brother was dead.
  4. And, by the way, the story teller did not say the younger son sinned with prostitutes.  That is what the older brother said.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ February 16

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Zebedee, the father of James and John, was betrayed by Jesus when he recruited his sons along with his fishing partners, Peter and Andrew, so that his fishing business would fail.

Luke 5:4-11  –  Matthew 27:56  –  Matthew 20:20-21  –  Mark 15:40  –  Mark 16:1-8  –  Matthew 8:20  –  Luke 9:58

Fact of the Day

No!  Just before recruiting them, Jesus performed a miracle of catching so many fish at the wrong time of day that Zebedee’s nets were about to break.  It was a message to Zebedee that his fishing business would do fine.

In fact, Zebedee’s wife, Salome, traveled with Jesus and his mother sometimes, probably donating funds (since he did not have any) and helping with the women and children.

She certainly had enough money to partner with the other women in paying for expensive spices for his “embalming”.  Rabbis Joseph and Nicodemus had already bought 76 pounds of spices (at that time valued at some $200,000) and the five women brought even more.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ January 18

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Jesus gave the apostles the power to forgive sins and their decision will be accepted in heaven.

Matthew 16:19  –  Matthew 18:18  –  I Corinthians 9:5

Fact of the Day

No!  The term “shall be” or “will be” (future tense) was not in the original Greek. In the Greek, the term is really “shall have been” was “has been” (past tense).   In other words, whose ever sins they forgave were already forgiven in heaven.

Soon will come your morning

0-Come Fly-ChildsCartoonMediumCoverThe scripture for today, May 3 (5/3), is Psalm 5:3 as found in the Old Testament of the Bible:

“In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning, I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.”

Morning. The time of new beginnings. Birth is a morning. Graduating from a school is a morning. Marriage, a new job, birth of a child ~ these are obvious mornings.

You can create your own morning of life in a spiritual way too. You can stop depending on yourself and begin following and depending on God. You cannot fix all your problems. Sometimes you get yourself into your own problems and don’t know how to get yourself out. But God knows.

Lay your requests before God. Then wait. Waiting in the shadows can create frustration and even panic. But wait in peace. It is not quite dawn, and God is preparing the answer to rise up in your heart and life.

He loves you as his child and knows when the moment is right for your dawning. Sometimes when you look back, you are most grateful he did not answer a prayer for you; he had something better in mind. And then, it was morning.

God loves to answer prayer. Therefore, while still in the shadows, wait. Do you see it now? The grayness of dawn with silver hopes intertwined?  Wait in peaceful expectation.  Soon will come your morning.

When he is in your heart, is he home?

0-BK 8-ComeFlyWithMe-Cover-Medium-NewThe scripture for today, February 1 (2/1), is Mark 2:1 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

“A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home.”

Just think of it. Jesus coming home. The place where his family lives. The familiar places he’d seen walking around town in earlier years. The familiar faces. Hearing a voice in a crowd and recognizing it and automatically knowing s/he is a neighbor. Being able to walk through a market almost blindfolded because the same shops are in their same places selling their same goods.

Has Jesus come home to your heart? Is it familiar to him? Does he recognize you? When he hears your prayers, does he automatically know who you are? Can he walk beside you as you walk through life, knowing the places you will be visiting? Does he live with you?

When he is in your heart, is he home?

Shhh. Listen. God is calling you.

The scripture for today, January 11 (1/11), is 2nd Peter 1:11 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

“And you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

0-BK 8-ComeFlyWithMe-Cover-Thumbnail-NewHow often do you forget that earth is not your home? As an old gospel song says, “We’re just passing through.” Do you really believe that?

If someone told you tomorrow you were going to die, would you go into a panic? Would you beg God to let you live another ten or twenty years? Would you feel this was the beginning of the end?

To a true Christian, your dying is the end of the beginning. You have a whole “life” ahead of you in heaven. A never-ending life. Do you live like you believe it? Will you die looking forward to it?

Are you even a Christian yet? What is your life like? Do you even know what is in the Bible, God’s messages to you? Does the thought of heaven sound boring to you?  Do you even like God?

Stop and listen to the empty place in your heart (Ec. 3:11).  Do you hear it?  Shhh.  Listen…  God is calling you.

0-BK 8-ComeFlyWithMe-Cover-Thumbnail-NewCOME FLY WITH ME is the last novel in the series THEY MET JESUS.  Jesus has been buried. His apostles have mourned in confusion. Suddenly he is back!  Alive again!  He appears to them out of nowhere every Sunday until it is time to go. Training is over.  Now left alone, the apostles figure out their strategy.  Be bold.  They are, and they are beaten and imprisoned.  They cannot let their savior down.  They go back and preach again, and again the beatings and imprisonment.  Thousands become Christians anyway!  Eventually, they part ways to go into all the world.  Five decades pass. John is the only one left.  Then his old Friend from days of his youth returns.  What a reunion.  To BUY NOW, click a book cover or paste this:    https://bit.ly/2OzEnXc

The Glimmering Door

The scripture for today, December 31 (12/31), is Luke 12:31 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

0-BK 8-ComeFlyWithMe-Cover-Medium-New“But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.”

The kingdom is already here (Luke 9:27; Colossians 1:13), but heaven is not. That is the final destination of the kingdom. Do you actively seek God’s kingdom? Or do you drift and think God should feel obligated to take you into his heaven? Do you feel like you’re “not so bad,” so God would be bad to not take you into his heaven?

Heaven is God’s home, not yours. God has a door into his home, just like you have a door into your home. God is not required to open his door to just anyone, just like you are not required to open your door to just anyone.  You cannot just show up at the door and smile and assume he will let you in, any more than people who knock on our door and smile can assume you will let them in.

You let people into your home who you have gotten to know and whose motives you trust. Have you given God a chance to get to know you and trust your motives? Are your daily motives to enter heaven, God’s home? Do you even like God?

This life you live on earth is not your permanent life or residence. This is the testing place to see how you handle problems and to see how much your spiritual muscles will grow. God has plans for Christians in heaven we do not know about. What we do know is that he is not a God of idleness. Do you live like the earth is all there is? Do you fear hell?  Do you prefer heaven, where people will worship all the time? Does that sound boring to you?

You are about to enter a brand-new year. Today, decide to start over fresh and set your new goal: To step through the glimmering door, enter God’s home his way and live with him.  Forever.
