Surprise of the Day

How much was one mite worth?

Mark 12:42

Fact of the Day

The poor widow gave God all that she had left – one mite.  The mite she gave to God was worth 1/64th of a day’s wages.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ March 7

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

The Samaritan woman at the well had lived with five men not her husband and the current one was not.  And she was an outcast since she went to the well at noon (Jewish time) or 5:00 PM (Roman time) and everyone always got their day’s supply of water in the morning.

John 4:15-18  –  John 4:39-42

Fact of the Day

No!  This woman had gone through the agony of being widowed five times!  Could you?  True, her sixth was not her husband, but she had been married to the others and lost them probably in tragedies of diseases and accidents and maybe even war.

She was respected in the city.  When she told them about Jesus, she influenced the whole city to stop what they were doing, go down to Jesus and hear him.

SURPRISE OF THE DAY ~ March 3

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Surprise of the Day

How could Nathaniel possibly know instantly that Jesus was the Son of God?

John 1:48-50

Fact of the Day

Jesus had seen Nathaniel “long distance”.

  • Perhaps he was in that orchard for peace and quiet so he could study the prophecies.
  • Perhaps he always studied in another orchard, but that day, the fruit pickers were there and he could not be alone. So he moved to another orchard.
  • Perhaps on his way home from work he was so troubled about something, he went to the orchard to be alone and sort things out.
  • Perhaps he had just gotten a new job as a fruit picker and that was his first day.
  • Perhaps he knew a widow with arthritic hands and not much income and decided to take her some of the fruit from the orchard.

Whatever the unexpected reason that Nathaniel was in that orchard, Jesus saw him there when he thought he was alone.

The day before, Jesus had spent the day explaining things to Andrew and Philip over in Bethany where John was baptizing. Jesus had seen Nathaniel long distance.  Only God can do that.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ February 27

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible ...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

When Andrew went to tell his brother, Peter, he had found the promised Messiah, they were at home in a northern province and their city of Bethsaida, along the Sea of Galilee.

John 1:28  – John 1:40-43 – John 2:1

Fact of the Day

No!  John was preaching and baptizing in Bethany in the southern province of Judea. Philip and Nathaniel were down there too.  Andrew and Peter may have been down there lining up merchants for their fishing business.  Bethany was 95 miles from Cana.  They arrived in Cana of Galilee after traveling three days. Cana was only 12 miles from Bethsaida.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ January 3

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Demon possession has always existed and is as common today as it was during Bible times.

Matthew 4:24  –  Matthew 9:32  –  Matthew 10:1  –  Matthew 12:22  –  Matthew 17:18  –  Mark 5:1-20  –  Luke 4:33-36  –  Luke 10:17  –  Acts 6:16-18

Fact of the Day

No!  Examine the Bible. God allowed demons to reveal themselves only during the lifetime of Jesus and his apostles. Demons having access to our world ceased when Jesus finished proving to the world his power over them.

Notice, he did not do exorcisms and beg them to come out. They were afraid of him. He ordered them. He commanded them. He never begged them.

There is no mention of demon possession in the Christian writers of the 2nd and 3rd centuries – “Apostolic Fathers” or “Eusebius’ Ecclesiastical History.”

Oops of the Day

Everyone has to walk through the valley of the shadow of death upon their death.

Psalm 23:4  –  Matthew 4:16

Fact of the Day

No!  For the Christian, light has come to the shadow of death!  It is neither shadow nor death.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ December 28 (the rest of it)

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

During Jesus early days preaching,  he was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee and saw Peter and Andrew, who he had only met briefly where John the Baptist preached.  But. when he told them to follow him, it was amazing that they dropped everything and did.

Matthew 4:13 and 18-20  –  John 1:44  – Luke 5:10

Fact of the Day

No!  Peter and Andrew lived in Bethsaida, just two miles from Capernaum..  By then, Jesus had moved from Nazareth to Capernaum.  James and John (who were related to Jesus) were Peter’s and Andrew’s fishing  partners.  Jesus  had probably already known Peter and Andrew for years.
