ON APRIL 15, 1912, THE GREAT TITANIC SANK.
My father was nine years old that day in 1912.
My grandmother was pregnant with my mother that year.
I was born 28 years later.
Around 1948 in Michigan, my Sunday School teacher, Mrs. Oliver had a boarder who had been a little boy on the Titanic when it sank. He remembered being hoisted into a lifeboat and it being lowered until it touched the vast Atlantic Ocean. He remembered slipping away in those icy waters while looking back to watch the mighty indestructible ship helplessly sink. Over and over he would tell his land lady, “I could hear the music as it sank. “NEARER, MY GOD, TO THEE. NEARER TO THEE.” Then she would solemnly begin singing it with tears and we children would sing with her.
