99 CENTS. The magi are puzzled when they enter Palestine. No excitement, no parades, no…

The magi, having traveled all the way from Parthia in the east, are puzzled when they finally  cross the border. Life as usual in Palestine.  No excitement. No parades.  No banners.  The Jews stare at the long caravan of regal magi on plumed camels with silk saddles, wondering why these rich and stately foreigners are in their country….

The magi arrive at Bethlehem about midnight. They have found it.  “Well, this is it, gentlemen,” Yasib says under his breath. “The King of all kings. The Priest of all priests. The one predicted centuries ago by Magi Daniel.”

Hey, you magi, or whatever you unbelievers call yourselves. You’re not wanted here. This is our religion. Don’t go changing everything. You’ve got it all wrong.

Joseph is bleeding. From the broken promise. The broken heart. The broken life.

Joseph sinks down to the floor with his etched picture of Mary. All broken. Crushed. Cut to the heart. Unhealable. Inconsolable. Betrayed with the ultimate betrayal.

Sprawling completely prostrate now, Joseph hits his fist against the floor. He is bleeding. Bleeding from the broken pottery. Bleeding from the broken promise. The broken heart. The broken life. “Oh, Mary… Oh, God…” he groans

The two women fall into each other’s arms, locked in love, faith, and ultimate submission to holiness.

My dear friends in the Lord, I’d like to share with you how this book – STAR SONG – came about . When I was seventeen years old at Harding College in 1958 I wrote some of which you will read in this book. When I showed it to some of my girlfriends, they said I should write the entire life of Christ. I told them I was not old enough and had not experienced enough of life yet. But I promised I would write it when I was sixty.

Through the years, I added things and changed things, first on my portable Royal typewriter, then an electric typewriter, and finally my “amazing” Selectric typewriter. And the pages had smudges where I had erased and replaced words here and there and became aged and brittle. Much of what you will read now of Mary’s conversations with Gabriel, her family, and Elizabeth I wrote when I was seventeen. Also, most of what you will read from the time Jesus left the fortress with his cross to his last breath I wrote when I was seventeen.

Throughout the years, my growing number of pages were stored in closets, bottom drawers, and, finally, file cabinets as I moved through life from one place to another.  I even sometimes separated parts of them into inspirational pamphlets which I printed with those ditto machines with their purple ink and later on mimeograph machines, getting ink all over my hands and clothes. Yet, all through those forty-three years, I remembered my promise made in my dormitory room so long ago when we were all so young.

Then, when I was fifty-nine, having lived and experienced far more during those years than I had really desired, I sat down to finish writing my entire life of Christ. I cannot recall whether it was during the summer or winter months when I finished it, but it was in the year 2000. I had kept my promise.

Despise not small beginnings

0000-BK 1-StarSong-CHILD'SCartoonCover-MediumThe scripture for today, April 10 (4/10), is Zechariah 4:10 as found in the Old Testament of the Bible:

“Who despises the day of small things?”

We tend to admire big things ~ big buildings, big empires, big trees, big causes.  Sometimes it is difficult to remember that those things started out small.

Have you been wanting to accomplish something big? All buildings started out with one board or one stone. All empires started out with one person. All big trees started out as one seed. All big causes started out with one dream.

Perhaps your dream started out small but stayed small. That doesn’t mean it will always be small. It may become big years from now, or even in someone else’s lifetime. Don’t despise what you have now.

Have you been putting off trying to make your dream reality because it won’t be big, and people will laugh at you, and you will get depressed?   Do not fear it. Have faith in it.  Plant that small seed.  Do not despise it. Embrace it. Nourish it.

Make today the day of your new beginning. Launch your dream. Soar with it, even if you’re the only one who does.

Becoming Flesh

0000-BK 1-StarSong-Cover-new-MediumMajestic God of the heaven and earth with all their bewilderments and surprises and astonishments. You made all which exists. You made it all for our pleasure and benefit. You also made it as a proving ground to test the power of love through us. Hate can and never will overcome love. Hate wants to accuse and punish. Hate wants instant gratification no matter who it hurts. Hate loves to hate. Love covers up the wrong in others because it is merciful. Love wants to patiently develop and grow. Love always is strongest. That is you, my God. You are Love and I worship you.

Ah, how can I thank you, my Lord, for making this earth, then becoming flesh and walking among us? We saw your love, we felt your love, we were saved by your love.  Without you, my life would only be getting and earning, building and making ~ all the while, trying to find some meaning in life. You provide the meaning: Life with you is life to its fullest and it is eternal.

Give yourself for Christmas

The scripture for today, December 24 (12/24), is Luke 12:24 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

0000-BK 1-StarSong-Cover-new-Medium“Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn, yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!”

In many nations right now, things are financially strained. Luxuries? No. To be able to live until tomorrow? Yes.

Which is more valuable? To impress men or impress God? A life dedicated to things impresses men. A life dedicated to doing good things impresses God.

I know of a group of believers in Jesus recently in an African country who had to flee soldiers who were after Christians. They had to run immediately upon sight of the soldiers. No time to pack anything. Just run.  Escape. Run. Escape.

To get to true safety, they had to walk a hundred miles. What did they eat?  Grass. Leaves from bushes. Tree roots. But they made it. They made it to safety and the loving, protective arms of other Christians.

Today, instead of a luxury, can you send that money to people in parts of the world who are struggling to stay alive? Struggling to stay safe because they are Christians?

Consider the ravens.

PS ~ Those of you with children, and you cannot get them much for Christmas: Write IOU’s to them and put each one in a box. Wrap each with typing paper if you don’t have Christmas paper. And with a red or green crayon, draw a ribbon on top. What’s on the IOU’s? “One hour of coloring with you.” “One hour of playing ball with you.” “Three hours of hiking with you.” “Two hours of baking cookies with you.” Give yourself for Christmas!
