Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son to him BECAUSE he wanted to check on Abraham’s faith and find out how strong it was.

Genesis 22:12

Genesis 12:4  –   Genesos 21:5  –   Isaiah 3:24c

Fact of the Day

No!  God knows everything!  Test also means to exercise, put pressure on – such as lifting weights to build muscle.  He wanted to help Abraham’s amazing faith grow even stronger.  How do I know?

Where God says, “Now I know,” the word now is not in the original Hebrew. Now is not necessary any more than it would be necessary to say, “Now I know why I gave you that name,” or  “Now I know we ate dinner together yesterday.”  These things you already know, so “now” is not necessary.

In Genesis 22:12, the sentence begins with the Hebrew term KI , which literally means “burning, branding” and is translated “know”.   The word is translated in Isaiah 3:24 as branding.

What God was basically saying was, “I knew all along your faith burns deep in your heart!   Now you know it!”   It was a way of saying with great pride for someone else, “Atta boy!”

And in the process,  Abraham’s  amazing faith  grew  even  stronger.

SURPRISE OF THE DAY ~ August 20

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Surprise of the Day

During the early cenuries of mankind, they lived often to be 800 or 900 years of age.

Then God changed all that.  He said eventually, the average age of  man would be reduced to 120 years.

Genesis 6:3

Genesis 5 – Genesis 10-11 – Genesis 25:7 – Genesis 35:28 – Genesis 47:28 – Genesis 50:26

Fact of the Day

Why?  How?  Perhaps, if we had a constant cloud covering like Venus – a thick ozone layer – before the flood, UV rays would not be able to get through as easily. After the clouds were broken up for the first rain, the ozone layer would not be as strong. Whatever the reason, what God declared happened:

Noah lived to be 950.  Now, notice how the ages of people born after the flood gradually declined beginning with Noah’s son Shem who lived mostly after the flood.

  • Shem lived to be 600
  • Arpachshad lived to be 438
  • Shelah lived to be 433
  • Eber lived to be 464
  • Peleg lived to be 468
  • Reu lived to be 239
  • Serug lived to be 230
  • Nahor lived to be 207
  • Terah lived to be 205
  • Abraham lived to be 175
  • Isaac lived to be 180
  • Jacob lived to be 147
  • Joseph  lived to be 110

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

People had always eaten both meat and vegetables.  Being a vegetarian is a modern thing.

Genesis 9:2-3

Genesis 2:16 and 19-20  –  Genesis 3:1-2  –  Genesis 9:2-3 – Genesis 11:10-20

Fact of the Day

No!  After the flood, God told Noah that he would put the terror of humans in all animals and that they could now eat the meat of animals.  Look it up.

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

It was no big deal about rain when Noah began to build his ark!

Genesis 1:5-6 – Genesis 6:17 – Genesis 7:11 & 24 – Genesis 8:2 – Genesis 9:13

Fact of the Day

No!  It had never rained before.  The ground sent up a mist to water the plants.  In fact, God did not tell Noah about rain until it was about to rain!  All he told Noah to get him to start building the ark was that there was going to be a big flood.

Finally, when the flood began…

  • All the springs of the great deep were OPENED and burst forth
  •  the floodgates of the heavens were OPENED.
  • And RAIN FELL on the earth forty days and forty nights

Then, when the earth was flooded enough…

  • The springs of the deep  were CLOSED
  • and the floodgates of the heavens were CLOSED
  • BUT the rain STOPPED falling from the sky.

Yes, everything was closed except rain.  God made it stop, but he did not close up the possibility of future rains.

According to Genesis, earth must have had a constant cloud covering that made possible a mist to come up and water the ground. But somehow, God opened up those clouds during Noah’s flood and made rain possible.  And, for the first time, man could look up into the sky and see a RAINBOW.

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

When Jesus came to earth, he emptied himself of his divinity.

Philippians 2:5-11  –  Ephesians 4:10  –  Colossians 1:9 & 16  –  Colossians 2:8-9 –  John 1:1-4 & 17  –  Luke 5:22  –  Matthew 8:23-27  –  Matthew 14:22-33  –  John 20:19 – John 1:46-50  –  Ephesians 4:10

Fact of the Day

He was in the form of God and then emptied himself into the form of a human – divinity and all.  He was limited to a human body, but he could still do divine things.  When he healed the maimed (the crippled for all reasons including missing legs), he could make them grow back – creating them.  He could still read minds.  He could still command the winds which he made, and walk on water which he also made.   He could merge with the molecules of a wall and walk “through the wall”.  He saw people “long distance”.  Shall we go on?  And on?  And on?

Oh, and one more thing.  After his ascension, he filled the universe.  Why?  Because God is everywhere.

Oops of the Day

“I love to sing to God plucking the strings of my guitar or pounding on the strings of  my piano.

I know God loves it!”

EPHESIANS 5:20

Fact of the Day

You did well to want to pluck strings as you sing to the Lord.  But God gave us a better instrument to play on.  It’s the one he wants.  Which one?

Well, we are to “sing and MAKE MELODY” in our hearts.  But that translation is vague.  In the original Greek of the Bible, it says, “sing and pluck on the strings of…”

“Yes, yes!  I knew I was right.  Tell me the strings of which instrument and I’ll do it.  Anything for the Lord I love.”

The Greek says “sing and pluck the strings of  YOUR HEART!”

“Does that mean I’m going to have to ditch my guitar and piano?”

May 18, 1980 ~ The Day I Saw Mount Saint Helen’s Erupt

I was there when Mount St. Helens blew. But, while things were still “normal,” we used to go up to the mountain and play in the snow in the summer. It always reminded me of an ice cream cone. The locals said the old Indians told them it was a volcano but it probably would never blow again. Never say never.
.
It blew in Sunday morning. I overslept and woke up at 10:00. I looked outside because it was still dark. It was snowing – gray snow. I looked for the birds. What did the birds do? I spotted them hopping around or huddled under sturdy, low-branched evergreen trees. The ash fell for days. The speed limit was 10. People were told to wear surgical masks outside and to put pantyhose on their car’s air filter. Entrances into and exits out to the interstate were blocked off. No one could get in or out (except for back roads with inches-high of ash on them). TV went blank. Radio stopped all programming except emergency news and advice.
.
A couple of days later, I volunteered to man the telephones where people could call in giving us the name and identifications of lost relatives. And we took calls from the “lost-and-found relatives.” But mostly it was for the lost. I remember hearing about people who were fishing in one of the mountain rivers when it blew and the air was so hot, their lungs were burning. They jumped in the river and went under water as long as they could. Then come up for air but put their wet jacket over their heads to protect them from the “fiery air”.
.
It was a strange time of wondering what would be next. I remember hearing a report on the radio that we were at the top of the San Andreas Fault. They killed that story quick! Once the ash stopped falling, the radio told us to go outside and start cleaning up. First was the roofs. Ash is heavy. They told everyone to shovel the ash off their roofs before they collapsed. I saw neighbors getting on the roofs of neighbors who couldn’t climb up there. Then they told us to clean up our lawns. Most used a broom. Finally, they told us to pile all the ash up on the street side of our curb and the local garbage trucks would come pick it up. But still, we had to wear surgical masks – ash has a glass base and would have torn our lungs up.
Then it was over. We still got reports of “tidal waves” rushing down rivers. For a year, we saw the evidence of ash in those “tidal waves” on trees 30 feet up along those rivers. And we re-thought old expressions such as “as old as the hills” and “a solid as a mountain”.
.
Well, the years have passed. I was in my 30s at the time. Now I am in my 80s. And, I guess, you could say I became “as old as the hills”.
