OOPS OF THE DAY ~ August 25

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Moses sent his wife, Zippora, and his two little sons back to Midia, divorced her, and married another woman from Cush.

Exodus 2:21 & Numbers 12:1

Exodus 18:3-4  –  Exodus 4:20-26  –  Exodus 7:7 – Exodus 18:1-6 & 27 – Exodus 19:1  –  Exodus 6:16-23  –   Hebrews 3:2

Fact of the Day

  1. No! Moses was 40 when he married Zipporah IN MIDIA.  They had two sons – Gershon & Eleazar.
  2. After 40 years of marriage at age 80, Moses took his wife and two fully grown sons with him to head for Egypt.
  3. Part of the way there, Zipporah circumcised one of their sons (now ages c. 40 and c. 38).  Moses sent them back home (for circumcised son to heal and because of too many hardships in Egypt?).
  4. But, in less than 3 months after Moses freed the slaves, his father-in-law brought his wife and two sons back to Moses.
  5. Soon after, his father-in-law left, but not Moses’s wife and sons.

Later, Moses’s sister and brother complained about the Cushite woman he had married.  Historians sometimes describe Cush as Ethiopia, sometimes as Sudan, sometimes as Yemen, sometimes as South Arabia.  MIDIA WAS A NOMADIC TRIBE IN ARABIA.  It is believed the burning bush was somewhere around Mount Sinai in Arabia.

Centuries later in Hebrews 3:2, it says Moses and all his household were faithful to God.

And keep Satan frustrated & puzzled

The scripture for today, May 18 (5/18), is 1st Thessalonians 5:18 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

06-Moses-KindleMediumjpg“Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

This is one of the most difficult verses in the Bible to follow. How can we rejoice with the loss of a loved one, of health, of a job, of a home, of a position? The Christians at Thessalonica, in Greece, had been suffering a lot of persecution for being Christians. Some had even been killed for their faith.

Satan will do all he can to cause bad to happen in your life in order to get you to blame God and forsake him. But the real blame belongs on Satan. It may sometimes seem like the harder you try to follow God, the worse things get in your life.

Satan is afraid of you and is trying more than ever to weaken you, to break you, and get you back on his side. He doesn’t have to attack people he already has.

And sometimes, God stands back and tells Satan, “Do your best. This person will grow stronger, not weaker.” Along with the Christians in Thessalonica, you can “become a model….your faith in God…known everywhere” (1st Thessalonians 1:7-8).

So, through your tears, rejoice that Satan is so afraid of you. And at the same time, keep your eyes on Jesus, who never gave in when Satan caused bad to happen to him. Through your discouragement, rejoice that you are counted worthy to be treated the same way Jesus was treated. Give thanks, and keep Satan frustrated and puzzled.

Scripture for Wednesday, September 20 (9/20)

The scripture for today, September 20 9/20), is Luke 9:20 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

0-BK 5-FloodGates-Cover-Medium-New” ‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’ “

Jesus is still asking that question today. Who do you say Jesus is? Some people in the world say Jesus was the savior of the Christians, the same person as Moses to the Jews, and Mohammed to the Moslems, and Buddha to the Buddhists. In the name of being fair to everyone, they claim these are all saviors of different religions going by different names but of the same God.

Let us not be caught in the web of the New Age Movement that does not want to offend anyone, even if they are wrong,  claiming nothing is absolutely right or absolutely wrong.  Therefore, they put truth in shadows and claim all saviors are the same savior and all gods are the same God.

The Bible ~ the only religious book in the world that can be proven to be divine ~ says regarding our Jesus, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

Come out from the shadows. Stand up for Jesus, THE only Light, THE only  Savior.

Scripture for Tuesday, July 4 (7/4)

The scripture for today, July 4 (7/4) is Romans 7:4 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

0-BK 5-FloodGates-Cover-Medium-New“So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God.”

This is not talking about just any law. It is talking about the law, a specific law ~ the Law of Moses.

Have you ever tried wading through Leviticus, the third book of the Bible? It’s full of all those laws in the Law of Moses (over 600 of them). Thank God Jesus nailed them to the cross and we are no longer bound by killing animals, stoning people for adultery, tithing, having priests, burning incense, going to the temple three times a year, only traveling 1/3 of a mile on the Sabbath, paying for traveling mercies, and on and on.

How did “we” in today’s scripture die to the law? He said in the previous chapter (6:4) “we were therefore buried with him through baptism into death” and in Colossians 2:14 where Christ “having canceled the written code with its regulations that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross” and in Hebrews 9:13, 10:1 “By calling this covenant ‘new’ he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear….The law was only a shadow of the good things that are coming.”

God now freely gives us His gifts through Jesus Christ our Lord without the impossible Law of Moses. How blessed.

Scripture for Tuesday, May 23 (5/23)

The scripture for today, May 23 (5/23), is Exodus 5:23 as found in the Old Testament of the Bible:

0-BK 5-FloodGates-Cover-Medium-New“Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your [God’s] name, he has brought trouble upon this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.”

This is Moses talking to God, and Moses is very angry. Is it a good idea to be mad at God? Deuteronomy 34:10 says there was never a prophet like Moses “whom the Lord knew face to face.”

Getting angry [not violent and not out of control; that’s different] sometimes is part of a healthy relationship, as long as we are willing to stick around long enough to understand the other person’s point of view. Moses did not desert God. He spoke his mind, then waited to see how God would reply.

It wasn’t that God didn’t want to rescue his people from slavery in Egypt. God was not quite ready yet. And he probably did not rescue his people in the manner Moses had in mind. But eventually ~ after a little patience on Moses’ part ~ it happened: God rescued his people.

Are you angry at God over something? Tell him so. Then stick around and wait for him to express his point of view. It will happen some day. Maybe it won’t be from your point of view. Probably it will be better.
