OOPS OF THE DAY ~

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

The Jews were required to give a tithe to the temple every year.

Deuteronomy 14:22-28

Deuteronomy 26:12  –  Leviticus 1-5  –  Leviticus 27:2  –  Numbers 21:2  –  I Samul 1:11  –   II Samuel 15:7-8  –   Psalm 22:11, 25  –  Psalm 66:13  –  Psalm 76:11  –  Psalm 116:8,14,18-19  –   Job 22:27  –   Jonah 1:7-9

Fact of the Day

Yes and No!   It was much more. A good Jew gave about one third of his income, not just one tenth. (1) The Jews had to give an extra tithe every three years for their welfare program. (2) They had to pay for their vows, which in many cases were really special prayer requests.  (3) They had to buy animals for sacrifices for intentional sins, unintentional sins and sins requiring restitution.  (4) If they wanted to thank God for anything special, they had to buy grain for a sacrifice  (5)  If they didn’t have mney to buy the animals or grain, they had to take them out of their own supply, thus depleting their own “pay check.” (6) And every time one of their flocks or herds had a first-born “first-fruits”, they had to sacrifice it ~ another depleting of the “pay check.”

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

God doesn’t mind if I miss worshiping on Sunday.  After all, a person has to live.  I had unexpected company last Sunday, and well yeah, I will be missing the day of the big game.  But God understands.  We are tight!  He’s my buddy.

Exodus 20:8-11  –  Exodus 32:1-35  –  Hebrews 10:24-31

Fact of the Day

No!  People who are more interested in doing other things than worship would be miserable in heaven where they worship all the time.  Then, they would make heaven miserable.  This cannot be!

It is one of the most serious crimes in the Bible. People today who “skip worship” on Sundays to do other things [desecrate] are similar to the Jews who “skipped the Sabbath Day” in Bible times to do other things [desecrate]. It is serious. What will happen to them?

During the days of the Old Testament and when the Law of  Moses was kept, this was the command:  “You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy. Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it [does other things that day] is to be put to death.”

And in the New Testament, Hebrews says in part, “…25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. 26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.”

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

When I complain to God in prayer about all the bad things happening to me, he will hear my pain and solve my problems.

          Numbers 14:26

I Corinthians 10:10 –  I Corinthians 13:5c – Ephesias 4:30-31 – James 1:2 – Jude 1:16

Fact of the Day

No! Complaining is akin to bitterness and harboring grudges.  When we complain, we are telling God we do not want to be where he wants us to be or to experience what he wants us to experience.  Instead of complaining, we are to rejoice that things are bad for us.  Huh?  Look it up.

When you are tired and feel helpless, live in the moment.  Bloom where you are planted.  The world will notice.

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

God was mean to tell the Jews to take over someone else’s land.

Deuteronomy 12:29-31

Genesis 15:13-16  –   II Kings 17:16-18,  &  29-30  –  II Kings 21:3-11

Fact of the Day

No! God  promised Abraham that his descendants could take over  land occupied by other people – the Amorites. But not yet.  They had to wait until the sins of the Amorites peaked . The Amorites were practicing human sacrifice to the fire god Moloch (later adopted by Baal priests).  God used the Jews to punish the Amorites.  And he warned the Jews that, if they ever did the same things, that when they reached the peak of their evil, he would give the land to yet someone else.   Then later, the two Jewish kings did the same horrible thing – sacrifice their own  children.  So God kept that promise too. He let two nations come and take the land away from the Jews as their punshment. They ended up in today’s Northern and Southern Iraq – Assyria and Babylon.

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

If anyone has a vision of God speaking directly to them, it proves they are saved.

Numbers 23:7-10  –  Numbers 23:18-24  –  Revelation 2:14

Fact of the Day

No!  The pagan prophet Balaam made beautiful prophecies about the Israelites and Jesus, a savior who would come 2000 years later.  But he did so against his will.    God put those words in his mouth.  God made him bless the Israelites and would not let him curse them as Balaam wanted to do.  To try to counter his blessing, Balaam stayed around  and enticed those same Israelites to sin by eating food offered to idols and worshiping with prostitute temple priestesses in Moab (today’s southern Jordan).  Therefore, Revelation says he was the one who was cursed.

SURPRISE OF THE DAY ~ August 29

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Surprise of the Day

Did you know the Israelites sometimes sacrificed their children in fire?

Leviticus 18:21

Leviticus 20:1-27 –  Deuteronomy 12:31 and Deuteronomy 18:10 –  2nd Kings 3:27  –  2nd Kings 16:3  –  2nd Kings 17:17-18  –   2nd Kings 21:2-6  –   2nd Chronicles 28:3  –  2nd Chronicles 33:6  –  Psalm 106:37-38  —  Isaiah 57:5  –  Jeremiah 7:30-34  –  Jeremiah 19:5  –  Jeremiah 32:35  –  Ezekiel 16:20-21 –  Ezekiel 16:36-38  –  Ezekiel 20:25-31  –  Ezekiel 23:37  –  Hosea 13:2

Fact of the Day

One of the things the Israelites did when they worshiped the pagan non-gods of people around them, is that they sacrificed even their children in  fire.  Look at all the scriptures telling them not to.  God warned them that, if they became like the people he drove out of Cnaan so they could have the land, he would drive them out too.  So, they did and he did.  How horrible righteous Abraham’s grandchildren became.

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

The Israelite slaves escaped Egypt with a few necessities like tents, blankets, cooking pots, axes, and the clothes on their backs.  And a few donations from neighbors to get rid of them.

Numbers 7:13ff

Genesis 15:16  –  Genesis 47:28  –  Genesis 45:10  –  Genesis 46:28-34  –  Genesis 47:1-27  –  Genesis 50:8 & 22-23  – Exodus 8:22  –  Exodus 9:26  –   Deuteronomy 34:7

Fact of the Day

No!  Joseph lived to see 3 generations.   Remember, great grandfather Israel lived to be 147 and God had told Abraham they would escape during the fourth generation.

Pharaoh not only gave them Goshen (the best land of Egypt) to live in, but Joseph probably built a house (estate) for each brother and his father and occasionally gave them gifts.

After the tabernacle was erected in the wilderness, each tribe donated…
-1 silver bowl weighing 3-1/4 pounds of silver which would be worth $635 USD each in 2025
-1 fire pan weighing 4 ounces of gold which would be worth $12,200 USD each in 2025

They do not seem to have come from donations from the Egyptians (for back pay?) when they left because they were ALL ALIKE. Perhaps they had been gifts from brother Joseph since he likely gave his father and brothers all the same gifs..

Perhaps they treasured those special gifts from Joseph, so saved & protected them. Where ever those gold and silver dishes came from, they were ALL ALIKE.

By the way, the total value of all the donations (minus the animals) would be
-$7620 USD total value of silver in 2025
-$146,400 USD total value in gold in 2025

$154,020 USD TOTAL VALUE IN 2025

Leviticus

Fact of the Day

No!  There were over 600 commandments.   Here are the categories and sub-categories.  If someone kept them all and never broke a single one their entire life,  it would make them perfect.  But no one could.  No one could be perfect.  Well, until Jesus came along.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ August 26

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

The golden calf that Aaron made for the newly-freed slaves of Egypt to be their new god was Apis the Bull.

Exodus 32:1-35

Fact of the Day

No!  It does not say that.  It does not say Aaron made a golden bull.  It does not say he made a golden cow.  Eight times it says they made a baby bovine – a calf – out of their melted gold.

Back in Egypt, the goddess Mehet Werat (centuries later known as Hathor) was the creator goddess, the mother of all.  She is sometimes depicted as sitting and sometimes standing and carrying a child.  Normally, the sun is between her horns.  She supposedly gave birth to the sun god, Ra.  Ra dies every night, but his mother goes to get him and brings him back from the dead which we call dawn.

The Israelite slaves went into Egypt alive and well under Joseph.  Then they were plunged into slavery – their darkness.  Now, they have not only been resurrected, but they are about to give birth to a new kingdom – their dawn. For over 400 years, they had been exposed to the mythological gods of the Egyptians with hardly a mention of the one true God, the “I AM” – Jehovah/Yahweh.  It is easy  (but not excusable) to see how they could have “gone astray”, even though they did know who the “God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” was.

No Egyptologist knows who that golden calf represents. But one thing is for sure:  It was not a golden bull.
