February 10 ~ Things in the Bible not really in the Bible…and a few surprises

Surprise of the Day

Jesus praised a widow because she gave to God more than anyone else at the temple, even the rich people.

Mark 12:42

Fact of the Day

The widow’s mite she gave to God was worth 1/64th of one day’s wage.  She gave more than the rich people because she gave all she had.

Oops of the Day

Jesus’ crown of thorns was arranged neatly in a perfect circle with long, bare thorns everywhere.

Matthew 27:29

Fact of the Day

No!  First, it is nearly impossible to fold a branch in a perfect circle.  Second, it was spring, not winter.  There were leaves on the bushes and flowers.

A crown of thorns with just leaves on it would be a mock Julius Caesar crown.

A crown of thorns with flowers on it would be a mock Olympic winner’s crown.

February 6 ~ Things in the Bible not really in the Bible…and a few surprises

Surprise of the Day

Just before Jesus left earth forever, he told his 12 apostles he will be with us until the end of the Christian age.

Matthew 28:20

Fact of the Day

Well, not quite.  What was translated as, “I will be with you until the end of the age,” the word age comes from a Greek word meaning eternity.  What he actually said was “I WILL BE WITH YOU TO THE END OF ETERNITY!”

February 4 ~ Things in the Bible not really in the Bible…and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Caiaphas, the High Priest during Jesus’ adulthood, believed in everything in the Old Testament, just like any other priest.

Matthew 26:3-4  –  John 11:47-53  –  John 18:24-26  –  Acts 4:1-6; 5:17

Fact of the Day

No!  Caiaphas was son-in-law to Annas, the former high priest and was brother-in-law to Annas’ two sons.  They did not believe any of the prophets (which makes up most of the Old Testament).  They were all Sadducees.  They believed only in the Law of Moses and used it in a secular sense, not religious, because they believed once a person died, they go out of existence. They were basically atheists (per Josephus).

February 2 ~ Things in the Bible not really in the Bible…and a few surprises

Surprise of the Day

Why would Jesus pick on goats and say they represented bad people?  That’s not fair.

Matthew 25:31-34  –  Exodus 121-29  –  Leviticus 16:1-4

Fact of the Day

Under the Law of Moses the Jews kept an annual feast called the Passover.  It was a memorial of the time when God threatened the Jews and Egyptians that he would destroy the first born of every family for their sins.  But, if they put the blood of a sheep on their doorpost, God would Pass Over them and they would live.  The blood did not erase their sins, but hid their sins.

Also under the Law of Moses was an annual ritual on the Day of Atonement when the high priest would put his hands on a goat and symbolically transfer the people’s sins onto the scapegoat. Then the goat would be let loose in the wilderness.  Again, the sins of the people were not erased but covered over.  The word Atonement means to cover.

Centuries later, Jesus said he would judge the world [after dying in our place and saving us by his own blood] and allow the sheep (those who’s sins Jesus had completely forgiven) to be on his right side to enter heaven, while the goats (those who’s sins Jesus had not forgiven) would be on Jesus’ left side to go to hell.
