OOPS OF THE DAY ~

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible …and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

The Jews were required to give a tithe to the temple every year.

Deuteronomy 14:22-28

Deuteronomy 26:12  –  Leviticus 1-5  –  Leviticus 27:2  –  Numbers 21:2  –  I Samul 1:11  –   II Samuel 15:7-8  –   Psalm 22:11, 25  –  Psalm 66:13  –  Psalm 76:11  –  Psalm 116:8,14,18-19  –   Job 22:27  –   Jonah 1:7-9

Fact of the Day

Yes and No!   It was much more. A good Jew gave about one third of his income, not just one tenth. (1) The Jews had to give an extra tithe every three years for their welfare program. (2) They had to pay for their vows, which in many cases were really special prayer requests.  (3) They had to buy animals for sacrifices for intentional sins, unintentional sins and sins requiring restitution.  (4) If they wanted to thank God for anything special, they had to buy grain for a sacrifice  (5)  If they didn’t have mney to buy the animals or grain, they had to take them out of their own supply, thus depleting their own “pay check.” (6) And every time one of their flocks or herds had a first-born “first-fruits”, they had to sacrifice it ~ another depleting of the “pay check.”

Still want to follow the Law of Moses to get people to give more?

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible...and a few surprises

Surprise of the Day

I think we have all wondered about this through the years: Who does God consider faithful?  For the factual answer, see below.

Ezekiel 28:24-29

Fact of the Day

On the Day of Judgment, a formerly righteous man who becomes bad at the end of his life will be condemned.  So, if I have been a faithful gospel preacher and missionary, and converted tens of thousands of pagans to Christ for the first fifty years of my life, but lose my faith and drop out of the church the last year of my life, God considers me unfaithful.

But on the Day of Judgment,  a formerly bad man who becomes righteous at the end of his life will be saved.  So if I went around torturing and killing other people all my life until I am 82, but I become a Christian and live a faithful life during my 83rd year when I die, God consideres me faithful.

Look it up.  Think about it.

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible...and a few surprises

Surprise of the Day

The Bible has two books that explain the deep joy or grief we cause God.

 Song of Solomon and Hosea

Ephesians 5:22 to end  –  Revelation 21:2  –   Revelation 22:17 & 20

Fact of the Day

The Song of Solomon is about a bride and groom and their unquenchable love for each other, always longing to be together.

It is also symbolically about Jesus and the sacrificial time and attention he gives HIS BRIDE, THE CHURCH to rescue us from hell.

On the other hand…

…the book of Hosea is about a prophet who rescues and marries a prostitute and her ingratitude and betrayal by always running back to former lovers.

IT IS ALSO ABOUT ADULTEROUS CHRISTIANS and the selfish time and attention they give their former LOVES – their worldly interests – instead of their husband who is trying to save us from hell.

Oops of the Day

Bethlehem was a little village, just as the Christmas carol said, calling Bethlehem a little town.

Micah 5:2   –  Matthew 2:6 – II Chronicles 11:5-10

Fact of the Day

No! Micah 5:2 says that Bethlehem was a small clan within the Tribe of Judah.  Matthew 2:6 says Bethlehem was not even close to being the least among the leaders of Judah (Matthew 2:6). Bethlehem was a fortified, walled city and had been since the time of Solomon’s son, Rehoboam (II Chronicles 11:5-10).

SURPRISE OF THE DAY ~ November 17

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible...and a few surprises

Surprise of the Day

530 years before Jesus’s birth, the exact year the Messiah (the crowned one) would begin his public ministry was predicted

Daniel 9:24-27  –  Numbers 4:47

Ezra 1:1-2  –  Ezra 4:4-7  –  Haggai 1:1,14  –  Haggai 2:1  –  Ezra 6:13-15  –  Ezra 7:7-10  –  Nehemiah 3:16-32  –  Isaiah 11:1  –  Zechariah 6:11-13

Fact of the Day

Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, destroyed and burned both Jerusalem and the temple. Years later, Persia absorbed Babylon into its empire.  That was during the time when Prophet Daniel lived in Babylon and Persia. One day while praying, Daniel saw a vision.  The angel Gabriel told him exactly when the “Messiah” (the anointed/crowned priest-king) would begin to openly declare who he was.     It was predicted the Messiah would appear after 70 “wks” = 70 x 7 = 490 yrs.

Again, the Messiah would appear 490 years after the Persian King’s decree to restore & rebuild Jerusalem   (62 “wks” x 7=434 yrs + 49 “wks” = 493 yrs ) .

But 493 years is too long.  If you check the prediction, it says the Messiah will be “cut off”  (die) in the middle of 62 “wks” = 3 yrs.

520 BC – 30 yrs = 490

THEREFORE,  490 years from the time of the order to REBUILD/repair Jerusalem, Jesus began his ministry at age 30.

SOME EXPLANATIONS:

  • *Priests entered service at age 30. Zechariah said the Branch will be both high priest and king.
  •  *Often symbolism was used in the Bible to disguise its true meaning from the enemy.  Daniel lived in Babylon which eventually was part of Persia.

King Cyrus II – 550-530 BC – (He said to BUILD THE TEMPLE (II Chronicles 36:23)
King Cambyses II – 530-522 BC DARIUS HIS COUSIN
King Darius I: 522-486 BC – (He said to REPAIR AND REBUILD JERUSALEM in 520 BC (Daniel 9:25)

Surprise of the Day

Since Assyria had such a bad reputation for torturing to death enemy soldiers, how could Jonah convince even the king to repent?

Jonah 3

Fact of the Day

In this case, we need to examine world history and archaeological evidence for our answer.  Maybe Jonah did not know this, but by the time he arrived in the Assyrian capital city of Nineveh, the old king had died and there was a new king named Ashurdan II.  He had just ascended the throne and he was young, inexperienced, and impressionable.  He was 14 years old.  It was a time of new beginnings for Nineveh.

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

God’s Prophet, Samuel, came up out of the ground and appeared to a witch

I Samuel 28:11-14; 19

Deuteronomy 18:10-12 – Deuteronomy  24:1 – Judges 6:12 – Judges 13:3  – II Samuel 24:15-17 – Matthew 1:20-24  – Mark 1:34 – Mark 16:1-7 – Luke 1:11-20 – Luke 1:26-38 –– Luke 2:8-15 – Luke 22:43 –  Acts 12:7  –  Acts 16:15-18 – Matthew 17:3  –  Revelation 1:12-17, etc.

Fact of the Day

No!

(1) The witch was surprised when she saw the “ghost”.

(2) Only she claimed to see it.  Saul did not see it.

(3) Everyone who was around anyone seeing someone appear from the other world saw the person too.

(4) It came up out of the ground.  When Moses and Elijah appeared to Jesus, they were on equal level with him; they did not come up out of the ground.

(5) All heavenly beings who appeared on earth, even when dressed like a human, either appeared on equal level or from above.

(6) Jesus did not want demons to tell who he was, nor did Paul, even though it was the truth.

(7) Just because what the “ghost” said came true does not prove it was Samuel; Pagan Baalam’s prophecy came true, but he was condemned in Revelation. Saul and his sons did not have to wear their crowns into battle.

(8) God condemned all witches to death.

Psalm 42:8 – ‘By day the Lord commands his steadfast love, and at night his SONG is with me, a prayer to the God of my life”!
