Scripture for Saturday, May 13 (5/13)

The scripture for today, May 13(5/13), is 1st John 5:13f as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

0-BK 8-ComeFlyWithMe-Cover-Medium-New“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: That if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.”

What a wonderful and comforting promise: The God of the universe, the Creator, the King of all kings hears you!

Of course, it must be “according to his will.” Well, how are you supposed to know God’s will? By a feeling deep in your heart? Feelings are fickle. But can there be another way? Of course. It’s simple. Just read his very words to you in the Bible.

The Bible is full of examples of people who did right and who did wrong, to help you see the consequences of good and bad decisions. The Bible is also full of God’s advice to you. Proverbs is one of the books that is full of such advice. Read the Bible. You do not have to guess what God’s will is.

What about asking God’s will whether you should move to this place or that, whether you marry this person or that, whether you take this job or that? Perhaps all your choices are good. God has also given you free will. Always remember, no matter what you choose, “ALL things work together for good to those who love the Lord and called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

Scripture for Tuesday, April 25 (4/25)

The scripture for today, April 25 (4/25), is Proverbs 4:25 as found in the Old Testament of the Bible:

0-BK 8-ComeFlyWithMe-Cover-Medium-New“Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.”

There are a lot of interesting and fun distractions in life, so we have to remind ourselves over and over what is most important to us. We have only so much time in a day and in a lifetime. We can run back and forth from one fun thing to another, one power thing to another, one great–looking thing to another and keep wondering what our life is for.

God pretty much treats us the way we treat him. If we don’t like being around him, he doesn’t much like being around us. If we don’t like listening to his word (the Bible), he doesn’t much like listening to our word (prayer). If we don’t like to spend special time with him, he doesn’t much like to spend special time with us. God gives us the same courtesy we give him. God will not force himself on us, for he is a Gentleman.

So, what do you have in your sights to do today? Next year? The rest of your life? Eternity?

Scripture for Saturday, March 11 (3/11)

The scripture for today, March 11, is Ecclesiastes 3:11 as found in the Old Testament of the Bible:

00-Heroes-Alone-COVER-KINDLE“…He has also set eternity in the hearts of men….”

People have always thought about eternity. Everyone wonders sometimes why we are here and what happens when we die. All people hope to live on.

That instinct is God speaking to us saying, “Yes, there is an eternity, and I want to be part of yours.”

Indeed, there is a God-shaped emptiness in the heart of man. God wants to fill it. We want him to.

But how badly do we want him to? If we spend each day so busy pursuing things and pleasures and power, it’s easy to forget about him. Then our heart aches, and we do not understand why.

It is eternity calling out to you. It is God calling out to you. Listen! He’s calling you in His Word ~ the Bible. Open it, and listen….

Scripture for Thursday, February 16 (2/16)

The scripture for today, February 16, is 2nd Thessalonians 2:16 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

Oldoldstory-COVER-KINDLE“May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.”

How amazing! God, the Creator of the universe, and Jesus his only begotten Son, actually know who we are. If he didn’t, he couldn’t love us. Love is not in the abstract. It is specific. And it is specifically for you.

Not only that, but we are given eternal encouragement. Our friends may only encourage us when we are doing something that would help them. Our family members may encourage us as long as we do something they would do. But God’s encouragement never ceases. It is always there. There when we feel alone, when we feel forsaken, when we feel helpless, when we feel hopeless.

And yes, God gives us good hope. Sometimes things in our life may be going so badly that we have trouble having faith in God. But we can still hope. The candle of your faith may be flickering, but your hope can still be a flaming hope, a large hope, a good hope.

Scripture for Sunday, July 31 (7/31)

The scripture for today, July 31 is 1st Corinthians 7:31b as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

0-Cover-KINDLE“For this world in its present form is passing away.”

How easily that which we have slaved for over a period of years can pass away. It can happen as the result of fire, flood, storm, war, economic crisis. Every day something in this world “is passing away.”

What are we working for day to day? That which can so easily pass away? Or that which is eternal and will never pass away? What are your plans for today? Think about it.

DISCUSSION QUESTION: WHAT ETERNAL THING CAN YOU WORK ON EVERY DAY?

The scripture for today, November 26, is John 11:26 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

0-BOOK EIGHT-COME FLY WITH ME-Cover” ‘ And whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’ “

Jesus was talking to the sister of his close friend, Lazarus, who had just died. Of course we understand he was talking about spiritual death ~ the death of our souls. And death in the original Greek means separation; so in the case of our souls, it would be separation from God.

Revelation 20:6 & 14 refer to the second death which is the lake of fire. So what is the first death of our souls?

In John 3:3 Jesus said we must be born again of water and the spirit. Romans 6:4 says “we were therefore buried with him through baptism into death [of that sinful life] in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a NEW LIFE.”

Someone has said “Born once [physically], die twice. Born twice [physically & spiritually], die once.” If we emerge from the waters of our mother’s womb, that is the first birth of our souls. If we emerge from the waters of baptism, that is our second birth.”

So when Jesus said believers would never die, he meant our souls would never die. How reassuring!

The scripture for today, March 11, is Ecclesiastes 3:11 as found in the Old Testament of the Bible:

The scripture for today, March 8, is Philippians 3:8 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

Wings of Time

Wow! Paul, who wrote this, considered everything he had previously owned and every position he had ever held as rubbish ~ garbage ~ compared with belonging to his Lord. Paul apparently came from a well-to-do family since he was born in today’s Turkey but went to school in Jerusalem. He also apparently held a position in the Jewish ruling body, the Sanhedrin, since he could vote on whether to execute someone. So he probably owned a lot of things and had an honored position.

The King James Version of the Bible says he considered it all as dung ~ manure.

Where are your priorities? What do you spend most of your time on? The things you just have to own, physical pleasures you just have to have, the power you just have to claim? All to enhance the little inch of your life on earth? Or the deep and unconquerable love of Christ Jesus your Lord who will enhance your eternity?

The scripture for today, May 10, is 1st Peter 5:10f as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong and firm and steadfast.  To him be the power for ever and ever.”

This earth is not meant to be our paradise, to be our eternal home.  This earth is just the foyer.  God stands at the door to heaven and calls us.  But are we too busy watching over things here to look over at his door?  Are we too caught up with temporary things of this world to stop and listen for God?

Is there too much noise in our life?  The noise of problems with job, our home, our family, our government, our neighbors, our health?  Remember, we are only in the foyer.  Life is not always easy.  Do we have the stamina to not be side tracked?  Do we have the fortitude to keep walking toward his door?

God can make us strong and firm and steadfast  ~ if we will stop the noise and listen for him.  God can make us strong and firm and steadfast ~ if we keep our eyes on his door.
