The eternal mountain

Love Letters of Jesus & his Bride, Eccelsia-THUMBNAILThe Scripture for today, April 24 (4/24), is Jeremiah 4:24 as found in the Old Testament of the Bible:

“I looked at the mountains, and they were quaking; all the hills were swaying.”

I was living in a village near the bottom of Mt. St. Helens when it blew.  We had lived there for eight years. We had taken our children up to it and gone sledding, building snow forts, making snow angels, the works. 

It was our mountain. Our beautiful mountain. It reminded me of an upside-down ice-cream cone.  It was perfect in every way.  Everyone knew it was a volcano, but it had formed thousands of years before and would continue like it was for thousands of years in the future. It was our mountain, and it belonged to us to do with as we pleased.

But it wasn’t our mountain.  One morning I looked outside. It seemed as though we had been plunged into the inside of a furnace with all its ashes. I stared. It was snowing gray ash.  I stared more, wondering what the birds had done.  Relieved, I saw them huddled together under bushes.

Of course, the radio and TV had switched to Emergency. We were told to stay indoors because ash is deadly to the lungs. If we did go out, we had to wear surgical masks. If we drove, we were told to put nylons over the air filter and to not go over 10 mph.  Even then, the ash flew everywhere. Our freeway entrance and exit were blocked. The most disturbing thing I heard on the radio (yes, everyone kept their radio on) was that we were at the top of the San Andreas Fault.  And so, we like the birds, huddled and waited for more unknown.

Not only was our mountain turned inside out, but our world was too.

People have expressions that something is “as eternal as the mountains” or “as old as the hills.”  Not true. Nothing on earth is eternal. That also includes things, people, power, position, belongings, even dreams.  Eventually, they quake and sway and are gone. Only that which is spiritual is forever.

02-DreamMakerChildsCartoonSmallThe scripture for today, April 14 (4/14), is Esther 4:14b as found in the Old Testament of the Bible:

“And who knows but that you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

Today’s scripture is about a reluctant young lady who won a beauty contest and was chosen to be queen of Persia. Time has passed, and now a command has just gone out to kill all Jews. Queen Esther was a Jewess but had not told anyone at the royal court. She could continue to hide her nationality and let all her people die, or she could try to intervene with the king. She was the only Jew the king would have listened to. So, realizing she could be killed too, she spoke on behalf of her people. They were saved.

There are always situations in life in which you are the only one who can accomplish something very needed. Perhaps you are the only adult standing near a strange child about to run out into a busy street. Perhaps you are tall, and a short person needs to reach something at the store. Perhaps you know a particular language and others around you need you to explain something to them. Perhaps someone called a wrong number on the telephone and reached you instead.

What about during this word-wide pandemic and people without computers? What can you do while quarantined from everyone except those in your home?

  1. You can go to the home of someone living alone, and sit on their porch in a lawn chair and visit through the screen door. 
  2. You can lead others to form a parade to the home of a young person who is missing out on a graduation exercise, wave signs, honk your horns, put decorations on their front lawn.
  3. You can go to the home of a sick person and serenade them. 
  4. If you are a retiree and getting a regular monthly check, you can tighten your belt and send money to the church that is going to be overwhelmed with aid requests. 
  5. If you have old toys, you can wash them, put them on the porch of a family with children (duly disinfected), or tools you don’t use to the home of a craftsman, or your extra fabric to the home of a seamstress.
  6. What about calling a child and reading a story to them or an older person and singing to them?
  7. Is there a book you’ve wanted to write for years when you had time?
  8. Put storybooks or puzzle books or magazines or jigsaw puzzles on the porch of a family or person living alone
  9. Can you begin writing the story of your life to pass on to future generations?
  10. For large families running out of paper products, take over a supply of cloth handkerchiefs or cloth towels. A young family could use a supply of cloth diapers. 
  11. Take a supply of hand, dish, or laundry soap to a large family.
  12. Make a stew or cookies or a roast for someone.
  13. Do yard work for people.
  14. Repair or paint house exteriors.
  15. Make  100 or1000 handmade thank-you notes and leave them at a hospital for all the workers.
  16. Go through your congregation’s membership directory and pray for everyone by name.
  17. Go for a walk around your deserted neighborhood and tape an encouraging Bible verse on each front door. 
  18. Drive past deserted stores and office buildings and pray for those who are losing income.
  19. Read your newspaper, pray for everyone in it and, using your phone book, send them a note saying you did.
  20. If you get home deliveries, leave a box of goodies wrapped in individual packets at your door with a note, “Take one: This is my thank you.”
  21. Oh, and give blood.

As you go through life, there are situations in which you are the only one who can handle them or the only one who has thought of doing what others could be doing. Do you do them? Do you watch for those situations, or do you walk around in your own little world? Dare to be a queen. Or a king.

Listen! It’s the silent cries of people only you can help. Do you hear them?

The scripture for today, April 9 (4/9), is 1st John 4:9f as found in the New Testament of the Bible:Supper-Front Cover-Thumbnail

“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: Not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”

How perplexing. We are stymied. There is no solution. We humans do not have the will to live perfect lives. We give in to sin. Sin is too much fun to give up. We can never get it right. Romans 6:23 says the wages we earn for sinning is death. In the Old Testament era, God held Satan at bay from us by telling people to kill an animal in their place whenever they sinned. But it had to be done over and over. Still, every time we sinned, our souls died a little more. Then came our rescue, our solution. But the cost.  It was so high.  God sent his Son to us for a while with a body so his Son’s body could be killed (collecting our wages, the cost of our sins) in our place.

Finally, God invited mankind to bring our souls back to life through him ~ that is, become Christians. How do we become alive through Jesus? Of course, we know about believing Jesus was the Son of God and repenting of our sins. Also, Romans 6:4 says when we are baptized and come forth out of the Spirit’s watery womb, our souls are born again, and we now have a new life.

Still, it does not stop there. We must try the best we can to live as Jesus lived, speak as Jesus spoke, love as Jesus loved. With Jesus living in us, we are his mouth, his hands, his feet. It is then that we offer our own bodies as daily sacrifices (Romans 12:1).

Oh, Lord God.  I want to do this. I truly do. Help me.  Help me.

07-SHADOW-ChildsCartoonThmbnailThe scripture for today, April 1 (4/1), is Ephesians 4:1 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

“As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.”

Paul, imprisoned for spreading the word about Jesus? Now he wants others to follow his example, even if they end up in prison like him? 

Did Paul’s incarceration stop the Christians he was writing to from spreading the word?  More, did Jesus’ crucifixion stop them for fear they would be crucified too? Did early Christians decide it was too dangerous to tell people the way to escape hell and go to heaven? Never.

They loved people’s souls so much, they were willing to take insults, persecution, imprisonment and even death in the hopes their persistent love would Eventually, lead to people becoming Christians and being saved from eternal hell. They knew their “calling” as Christians.

How about today? Do you live a life worthy of your calling as a Christian? Do you stand up for Jesus and reach out to the lost, regardless of how they treat you? Or do you cower and use the excuse, “Once people see my godly life, they will ask me how to be saved”?  How many times do the lost really do that?

Rise up!  Stand tall as a brave soldier of the Lord. Dare to march into enemy territory and do everything you can to snatch the lost out of the claws of Satan.

No matter what they do to you.

If I had feet that were robust enough, I would climb the tallest mountain and raise a banner of love for the world to see.  If I had arms that were long enough, I would embrace the world with your magnitude. Give me eyes that see you in everything. Give me ears that hear you in all things. Though the world rebels against you, not wanting anyone to tell them what to do, I will defend you and reveal the part of you they do not understand ~ that you, their Maker, loves them so much you will spend their life running after them. They are falling into the mire and do not know it. They are obeying Satan and do not realize it. Waken them, Lord, with your magnificence and envelop them with love that goes deep into their souls and will not let them go. Give them new eyes to see you, new ears to hear you, a new heart that loves you back.

Ah, thank you, my Lord. Thank you for opportunities to suffer for you. Your Word says the righteous will always be persecuted. Take me down paths where I know persecution will travel toward me. May I never “play it safe”. Open up doors where Satan thinks he rules so I may have the privilege of proving him weak and wrong. Lord, you made me your bride. How blessed is that! Oh, the depths of the relationship you want with me. Thank you, my Lord, my God, the reason for my being. I worship you.

What if God made as much time for you as you do for others?

“Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, ‘Come back later; I’ll give it tomorrow’ ~ when you now have it with you.”

Christians generally are good people. They stay out of trouble at work and in the neighborhood. They obey the laws. They don’t use profanity, they don’t lie, they don’t cheat, they don’t steal, they don’t commit adultery, they don’t murder. These are bad things Christians don’t do ~ sins of commission.

But what about good things Christians should do but do not do? Too busy to stop and look around you for someone needing help? Too busy to drive someone to the doctor, or watch a child when a parent is sick, or fix a meal when a family is bereaved, or send a card for someone’s birthday, or call someone who is lonely? Too shy to say something to someone in distress? Too afraid to bring up heaven and hell to a lost one? These are sins! Sins of omission and they are just as serious.

Today, look around you. Who needs you? Not needs your neighbor, or a relative, or someone else at work, or one of the other members of your congregation, but you? You! When do they need you? Not tomorrow or next month or next year, but today!

Get out of your comfort zone. Quit committing sins of omission. Make a point to do something for someone else. When? Today. Too busy?  What if God made as much time for you and you do for others?

Oh, for the privilege of dying for you. Let my death have meaning. Do not give me a peaceful moment in which to die.

Thank you, Jesus, God materialized. Other religions cannot fathom that. Either their god is too far above mankind to do such a lowly thing, or their god made us and went on his merry way without another thought, another care. When I think about your glorious body that can appear and disappear at will, that can walk on water, that can go through walls, that can rise to the clouds, and know you are going to give me a glorious body like yours in heaven, well, I am flabbergasted. More amazing is that you care about me at all. You have made so many promises I cannot count them. Your blessings are beyond mathematical comprehension. How I delight in you and bow before you in gratitude and worship.

Silver Cover-KINDLE-thumbnailI praise you, Jehovah God, for placing me here so I can be a spiritual warrior with you as you fight Satan. Make me strong so, no matter what Satan does to me, I can make him get tired of trying and he backs down. You make me strong. May I never forget that. You are all power, all might, all potency. You invade the world of Satan and his angels and challenge everything they do. When Satan kills, you bring back to life. When Satan hates, you love. When Satan makes people run from you, you go after them and bring them back. There is nothing Satan does that you cannot undo. He is the destroyer and accuser. You are the Creator and forgiver. He is the hater of our souls, you are the lover. Great and magnificent is your very name. I cannot help but worship you.

Lord, sometimes I become too self-absorbed. Sometimes I go an entire day just thinking about myself ~ my wants, my needs, my desires, my dreams. Forgive my selfish thoughts. Stop me and make me reach out to others who wonder if anyone cares what happens to them. Help me be more like you.

Thank you for your Bible. It overflows with examples in the Old Testament and poignant teachings in the New Testament. It has everything I need. And, oh Jesus, you became one of us. You emptied yourself of your glory in order to become the ransoming sacrifice Satan wanted. But, how you fooled him. You died like he wanted, you paid the ransom like he wanted, then you tricked him and came back to life. You came back!  And alive! You were the first one and cleared the path for the rest of us ~ the weak ones ~ to come back to life after we die! What a God!

03-Naaman'sMaid-ThumbnailCoverAh, my Lord God of heaven and earth.  How I long to see you in all your glory.  I do not know how it is possible since you are larger than the cosmos with its two trillion galaxies and 100 thousand million stars in each one.  But then, you are the God of the impossible.  To behold the One who is Pure Love.  To be enraptured by my Creator.  Oh, to expand the wings of my adoring soul and fly to you.  This is my dream. This is my reason for being.

How can I stop thanking you, my Lord, for so many blessings?  A decent place to live, friends, sufficient food, reasonable health, a way to get around.  Restful evenings when I am enveloped in the arms of sleep and then sunshine that shoos the night away each smiling morning.  Mostly I thank you for materializing your Words in the form of Jesus so we could see you, hear you, touch you.  It was akin to me reducing myself to the form of a cockroach, so great was your sacrifice. I do not understand your love.  Open the eyes of my heart to know you better so I may express an all-consuming gratitude in my lowly way.

Satan did not have a chance against you.  Even when Satan planned to kill the souls of all mankind, you stepped in and would not let him. You ransomed us from him with that terrible price he demanded. You are so powerful. Satan keeps killing, you keep creating. Satan keeps convincing us to sin and you keep forgiving. Satan brings darkness into our lives, you bring sunshine into our souls. You are omnipotent beyond understanding. You are Love and will never give up the fight to keep Satan away from us. I cannot help but worship you, the Delight of my soul.

Jesus, my sins are so many. I do the same things over and over. I am trying to overcome them. I feel the guilt, but I also feel your everlasting forgiveness.  Over and over you forgive. Such love. Such love. How can you? You never tire of forgiving. How can I thank you enough? Each page of your Word astounds me. Within those pages, you reveal everything about yourself ~ your deepest longings for mankind, your disappointments, your feelings of betrayal, your shouts of joy. It’s all in there ~ as much as my finite mind can grasp. No guessing. Oh, and thank you for color. Color is so delightful! When Spring returns, all the colors will arise in greeting.
