I am kind of a world traveler. I have lived in Korea, United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka, Tokyo, Canada, Afghanistan, India and USA. I remember when President Kennedy was assassinated, watched the first human walk on the moon, Alaska became a state, President Kennedy & Martin Luther King were shot, and the first human walked on the moon. I remember when the first Star Wars movie came out, 900 religiously misguided humans committed suicide in Guyana, when Microsoft was "invented" and the Ayatollah Khoumeini took over Iran, kicked out western companies (employers) and returned his country to the dark ages. I WAS THERE WHEN MOUNT SAINT HELENS BLEW. I remember when the Berlin Wall fell, the Internet was created, the first warm-blooded animal was cloned (a sheep) and the Hubble Telescope was launched - all in the 1980s. And you?

Rising Heat in Tehran

I would like to recommend this book written by a missionary who freely converted Muslims to Christ in Iran between 1974 and 1979. That year, Ayatollah Khomeini made his triumphal entry into his homeland, created a constitution that said only an imam could lead the country, and declared it now was the Islamic Republic of Iran.  Author Don Petty worked there with an American company, so supported himself and his wife and children.

By the time the Pettys left three years later, they had built up a congregation of 120 Christians in Tehran.  Most of the book is about the members and their conversions.  They are wonderful stories of courage.  Toward the end of the book, he speaks of the riots and American companies being forced to leave.  This is what he wrote:

“Trying to see the future seemed futile on that airplane, but my memories of what I was leaving in Iran were real and remained dominatingly vivid.  Behind me was the land of Persia, mighty kingdom in the days of Cyrus and Darius, Esther and Daniel, a land invaded by Alexander the Great.  I was leaving behind the fruit of my work, some newly converted souls.  My minuscule part in the great plan of God to “gather souls” for spiritual purposes and life eternal, was closing as far as teaching the Gospel of Christ among the Iranian people.”

I hear rumors from many sources that the underground church in Iran is still flourishing.

Such a blessing available to all people and to me. Life is not worth living without you. Thank you for being able to have my very own copy of your Word and the time to read it, study it, and understand it. I am most blest.

The thought of you is staggering and beyond my comprehension.  Still, you reveal yourself and leave it up to me to understand what I can. That understanding is just a shadow, a whisper in this vast cosmos. Someday I will understand ~ well, maybe. Will it ever be possible? I am only human. Still, on that Someday, I will comprehend and praise you more than I ever imagined.

Your Bible, my Lord, is such a blessing. It is not confusion. It is not chaos in its wondering about this and that. It is not madness in careless guessing. It is order and harmony, peace and tranquility, it is the ultimate truth. There it is just waiting for me to discover its treasures. You intercede when I am too weak, but make me fight when I doubt both myself and you. I am never weak when you are near. I cannot see you, but oh how I know when you are at my side. I know when you are stepping between me and danger. I know when you are lifting me up and making me strong. Then my heart soars. I look up to you, am awed by you, and worship you.

Thank you, Lord God, for giving me your Words.  In them, you pour out your heart to me. When I read them, I weep with you, I laugh with you, I feel triumphant with you.  I read of all your own ups and downs as you call out to mankind, “Follow me.  I can lead you to safety. Follow me!”  And all the while, mankind replies with, “Why?  I’m fine doing what I am doing.  Falling?  I’m not falling. It’s all just a game.”  You created me for a purpose.  I will know what that ultimate purpose is when I am fully with you. But, until then, when people insult, I will forgive. When people gossip, I will forgive. When people attack, I will forgive.  And, when I fail to forgive in my weakness, lift me back up to forgive again.  Thank you for the privilege of fighting the fight of love alongside you with your strong forgiveness and indomitable love. Oh, and thank you for a warm home on this cold, rainy winter day and for the soft music in the background and family and friends and the church. My cup overflows.

You are stronger.  He thinks he is winning, but deep in my heart, I know he is not. There may be more people following him on earth but they are like ants compared with your lion-like strength. All power and glory and majesty are yours.  Of course, you will win! You said so yourself.

Ah, thank you, my Lord, for the way you have taught mankind to trust you. Over and over through the centuries and millenniums, you made promises but almost always said, “Later”.  Your promises are like shooting stars.  Sometimes they are fulfilled when I am not looking.  Sometimes, when I think back, I realize, you DID answer me. Then how amazed I become.  It’s kind of like counting my blessings.  And so, with a trust which you renew in me day by day, I keep plugging along, keep struggling, keep climbing. Oh, such a Lord I have who knows my ups and downs and everything between. Thank you for walking beside me and keeping your promise to never leave me.  And thank you for those times that are sprinkled with unexpected delights.

Silver Cover-KINDLE-thumbnailHow I praise you, my Lord Jehovah, for your love ~ loving me enough to help me become strong with an ethereal strength. Strength that burns with a divine energy.  When I choose to gather with others and worship instead of watching a ball game, something mystic happens in your world: Satan loses and you win.  When someone is mean and I tell them there’s nothing they can say to get me to stop loving them, Satan loses and you win. Everything Satan does, you can undo.  He can make sick, you can heal. He can cause death, you can bring back to life.  He can make me sin, you can forgive. What an amazing God you are.

Oh, it is hard to thank you for tragedies.  I don’t want them. I want to run from them. But, through them you constantly empower me. The more Satan dumps tragedies on me and I respond by refusing to blame you, the weaker he becomes. Through my tears, when I fight Satan’s tragedies with a smile, a whispered song, a gentle thought, I feel you there with me.  Through my groanings, I thank you for the privilege and that you count me worthy.  Ah, Lord God, I would die for you, just as you died for me.

Supper-Front Cover-ThumbnailLord God in whom I live, I move, and I have my being. I touch you with my spirit, feel your presence with my heart, and hear you in the wind. Oh, to be able to be with you. How I long for that day of days. I care not how I leave this world and enter yours. I care not if it be by disease or injury, whether in peacetime or war, whether while at my ease or by torture. As long as I will be able to see you face to face, this is all that matters.  I try to imagine what your world is like. All I know is that your world is as far beyond my imagination as living in the dark is compared with seeing through rays of sun.

Thank you for friends. No matter how difficult the world gets, you give me friends. A friend is like honey when I am hungry, a stream of living water when I am thirsty, a barrier between me and my disappointments. We mirror each other, we encourage each other, we lift each other up, and in the doing give each other a little bit of heaven on earth. Most of all, you are my Friend and walk with me through life as friends do, hand in hand. Ah, the very thought of walking and talking with my God lifts me to the pinnacle of wonder.

You made us to be farther away but as your children. How you do love us. I guess sometimes I envy the angels because they are always in your presence. But they envy humans.  I am your child. Your child!  I belong to your royal family.  What honor. What privilege.  What dignity you bestow upon me. And someday, I will behold you as you are and worship you on bended knees.

Thank you, God, for all you have done for us through history. We are the center of your world as children are to a loving parent. How you grieve when we fall, and rejoice when we return. Thank you for materializing your words in the form of Jesus.  Oh, to have been able to see and touch him. I am convinced that will happen someday and I will be one with you as the golden rays of sunshine are one with the steadfast sun.
