Things in the Bible not really in the Bible...and a few surprises

Surprise of the Day

How far did Jesus walk on water?

Matthew 14:23-25  –  John 6:15-19

Fact of the Day

When Jesus walked on water to get to his twelve on the Sea of Galilee, it was about 3:00 AM. They had already been struggling eight hours and by then were 3-1/2 miles from shore.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ January 13

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

When Jesus returns, the first thing he will do is send the angels out to gather up evil people of the world to be punished

Matthew 13:24-30  –  Matthew 13:36-43

Fact of the Day

No! The parable where good wheat is planted, then an enemy plants weeds among it during the night is about  hypocrites.   Look closely at verse 41 which says the angels will gather “out of the kingdom” (out of the church) those who cause others to stumble and are vulgar and pornographic, and he will punish them all.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ January 12

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

BLASPHEMING THE HOLY SPIRIT (UNPARDONABLE SIN) IS…

…attributing the work of God’s Spirit to demonic forces,

…taking the Lord’s name in vain,

…bowing to an image of Jesus,

…burning a religious document,

…damaging a church,

…etc.

Matthew 12:31-32  –  John 14:14  –  John 17:14

Fact of the Day

No!  I found all the above definitions on the internet.  But what did I find in the Bible?  All the above may be true, but they are much too limited.  Just before returning to heaven, Jesus said he was going to send the “Spirit of Truth.”   Three chapters later in the same discussion, he explained “God’s Word is truth.”  Therefore, blaspheming the Holy Spirit is not believing the Word of God.  Of course, it is unpardonable.  A person who does not believe in the Word of God will not repent either.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ January 11

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

The woman who had been bleeding for 12 years touched the hem of Jesus’ garment and was healed.

Matthew 9 – Deuteronomy 22:12-30  –  Numbers 17:8  – Malachi 4:2

Fact of the Day

No!  The word translated as “hem”  in both the Greek of the N.T. and in the Hebrew of the O.T. is  fringe. Actually, in the Old Testament, this word is usually translated fringe.  For example, God commanded they put fringe on the four corners of their garments – tsitsith. But sometimes it is also translated the wings of their garments.

However the root word is tsiyts, meaning a fruit-bearing blossom such as when Aaron’s rod blossomed and then brought forth fruit (almonds).

So, the woman who had been bleeding for 12 weakening years managed to at least touch the “blossom” (in its pre-fruit state) on one of the four “wings” of Jesus’ garment. She was healed by the life-giving blossom; it brought forth the fruit of her healing.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ January 10

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

The woman who had been bleeding for 12 years was broke all the time because of all the doctors she went to.  But at least she had her friends at the synagogue whenever she was strong enough to go.

Matthew 9:20  –  Leviticus 15:25-31

Fact of the Day

No!  For that whole twelve years, she had not been allowed to attend her local synagogue or the Jerusalem temple.  And, to make matters even more unbearable, for that entire twelve years, no one was even allowed to touch her. Check it out.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ January 8

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

As soon as Jesus called Matthew to follow him, he dropped everything and went.  This was remarkable faith since Matthew had never met Jesus in person before.

Matthew 9:9  –  Matthew 4:13  –  Matthew 9:1

Fact of the Day

No!  Jesus’s “own city” was Capernaum.  Archaeologists and ancient historians tell us that import-export business between India & China to the east, Africa & Egypt to the south, and Europe to the north was done in Capernaum.  Matthew had his booth set up in Capernaum.  Archaeologists believe Capernaum had a population of 1000-1500.  Everyone knew everyone else.  Jesus and Matthew knew each other before.

Surprise of the Day

Jesus was a mind reader.

Matthew 9:4  –  Mark 2:8  –  Luke 5:22

Fact of the Day

I think I would be a little nervous if I was around him all the time as his twelve apostles were.   On the other hand, I would not have to try to explain deep feeling I have about certain things.  He would just know.  So it could be hide-and-seek or comfort.

OOPS OF THE DAY ~ January 5

Things in the Bible not really in the Bible...and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

The Apostle Peter was not married.  Therefore, priests and popes should not marry.

Matthew 8:14-15 – I Corinthians 9:5

Fact of the Day

No!  If Peter did not marry, where did his mother-in-law come from who Jesus healed?  And  whose wife did Peter take along  with him on his missionary trips?
