April 30~ Things in the Bible not really in the Bible…and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Jesus questioned Peter about his love and loyalty to make sure Peter was sure this time after denying him in public.

John 21;15-17

Fact of the Day

No!   He was building Peter up a little at a time.  The 1st time Peter said he loved Jesus, Jesus replied, “Okay, you can take care of the young-lamb Christians.” The 2nd time, Jesus replied, “Good.  Then you can keep my sheep rounded up and together.”  The 3rd time, Jesus replied, “Good.  Now you can take care of all my sheep as a good shepherd.”

Oops of the Day

Doubting Thomas is our example of what not to be.  The other apostles believed Jesus had come back to life but he did not.

John 20:24-25  –   John 11:16  –  Luke 24:10-11  –   Mark 16:14  –  John 20:19-20

Fact of the Day

No!   A couple of weeks earlier while in hiding, Jesus received word Lazarus was sick. Jesus decided to go to Bethany which was about 6 miles from Jerusalem. The other apostles objected to him going so close to Jerusalem since the priests had announced they were going to kill him. BUT, Thomas said, “Let us go so we may die with him!” Later, after Mary Magdalene told the apostles she had seen Jesus in the cemetery and he had come back to life, it was just foolish talk to the apostles.  They refused to believe. When Jesus finally appeared to the apostles, he had to show them the nail and spear holes and chastised the apostles for not believing. In fact, Thomas was the first of the apostles to call Jesus God.

Oops of the Day

On resurrection morning, the wrappings that had been around Jesus’ body were piled in one place.  The square napkin that had been on Jesus’ face was neatly folded in another place inside the tomb.

John 20:6-7 – John 11:16

Fact of the Day

No! Back when Lazarus came back to life, the strips of linen wrappings were still around his body and the wrappings were still around his head.  His head did not have a single flat cloth laid over it. If that had been the case, the cloth would have fallen off of him when he stood up.  Jesus would not have told them to take the grave cloths off of him to free him.   Both Luke and John emphasize that Peter found Jesus’ wrappings without Jesus in them, like a hollow mummy.   The face wrapping strips that had been rolled around Jesus’ head were in another place, still with the form of Jesus’ head as though he had been beheaded.

  • These Greek words in the account of JESUS:   οθονιον (othonion) pieces of cloth like a bandage wrapping –  σουδαριον (soudarion) a sweat cloth also used as a hood συνδεσμος (sundesmos) many pieces bound together  – κεφαλη (kephalehead or skull –  ουκ (ouk) not + μετα (meta) within, inside –  χωρις (choris) apart, separate

Oops of the Day

The stone in front of Jesus’ burial cave had been rolled away.

John 20:1  –  Matthew 28:2  –  Mark 16:4  –   Luke 24:2  –   Mark 9:26

Fact of the Day

No! The word for “taken away” in Greek is “aero-menon” meaning it flew away. The word used by Matthew, Mark and Luke for how the stone was moved means to wallow around such as in with the demon-possessed young man: that threw him into a terrible convulsion (i.e., so that he wallowed on the ground).

Oops of the Day

Jesus’ body was neatly wrapped and placed in the tomb with a nice shape of a body.

John 19:38-39  –  Luke 24:1

Fact of the Day

No!   Joseph and Nicodemus wrapped Jesus’ body in 100 pounds of spices. They wrapped his body with swaddling bands with the spices intermingled in it. His body then probably looked double its normal size.

Oops of the Day

Jesus asked John to take care of his mother after his death just because his father had died.

John 19:27 & 25  –  Matthew 27:56  –  Mark 15:40  –  Matthew 13:55  –  Mark 6:3

Fact of the Day

No!  There was more to it than that.  Jesus had four half-brothers, but they did not believe who Jesus was, meaning they also did not believe their own mother.  But John did believe.  Besides, it was a natural  place to go since John’s mother was Mary’s sister.

A dozen or so priests and temple soldiers went to arrest Jesus in Gethsemane.

John 18:3

Fact of the Day

No!  A cohort of Romans soldiers was with them.  A cohort was between 300 & 600 soldiers.

Oops of the Day

When Jesus formed clay for the eyes of the man born blind, he told him to wash in the Pool of Siloam.  He walked a few steps and did so.

John 8:59  –  John 9:1 & 7

Fact of the Day

No!  Archaeologists show that he had to stumble his way 1/3 mile to get to that pool.

Surprise of the Day

If Jesus created everything in the world including human beings, do you think he could create eyeballs?

John 1:1-4  –  John 1:14  –  John 9:6

Fact of the Day

Man was made of clay.  The man born blind was healed when Jesus made mud and put it onto the man’s “eyes”.  When he formed the clay for the man’s eyes, was he making eyeballs for him?  Anophthalmia is a disease where a person is born without eyeballs.  About 1 in every 5,200 babies is born with this.

Oops of the Day

“The Prodigal Son” – The older brother should have forgiven his prodigal lazy brother who finally came home.

Luke 15:11-14  –  Luke 15:22-25  –  Luke 15:30-32

Fact of the Day

No! It was much more than that. It was jealousy, greed, and a desire for all or nothing. As the oldest son, he was going to inherit their father’s entire estate (note v. 31), yet he resented one little party given to his brother. And, his father thought his youngest was dead; the older one acted as though he wished his brother was dead.
