March 30 ~ Things in the Bible not really in the Bible…and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

When Andrew went to tell his brother, Peter, he had found the promised Messiah, they were at home in Bethsaida by Lake Galilee where they fished for a living.

John 1:28  –  John 1:40-43  –  John 2:1

Fact of the Day

No!   John was preaching and baptizing in Bethany in the province of Judea. Philip and Nathaniel were down there too.  Andrew and Peter may have been down there lining up merchants for their fishing business.  They arrived in Cana of Galilee after traveling three days. Finally, they went back home and Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law in Bethsaida.

March 28 ~ Things in the Bible not really in the Bible…and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

The Israelites were poor when they were slaves and  left Goshen, Egypt

Numbers 7:13ff –  Genesis 47:28  –   Genesis 50:22 –  Deuteronomy 34:7 – Genesis 45:10  –  Genesis 46:28-34  –   Genesis 47:1-27 – Genesis 50:8  –   Exodus 8:22  –  Exodus 9:26

Fact of the Day

No!   The escaped slaves were only 3-1/2 generations from Joseph and some had known Joseph’s grandchildren.

  • Father Jacob died at age 147 (Gen. 47:28).
Joseph died at age 110 (Genesis 50:22)
Moses died at age 120 (Deuteronomy 34:7).
    AVG AGE 126 years.

They were there 3-1/2 generations (430 years). Joseph lived to see 3 generations (Genesis 50:22-23)

Pharaoh not only gave them Goshen (the best land of Egypt) to live in, but Joseph probably built a house (estate for each brother and his father) and occasionally gave them gifts.

They lived in Goshen the whole time until their escape. So probably lived in the same fine houses they lived in while Joseph was in power.

After the tabernacle was erected in the wilderness, each tribe donated
-1 silver bowl weighing 3-1/4 pounds of silver which would be worth $635 USD each in 2025
-1 fire pan weighing 4 ounces of gold which would be worth $12,200 USD each in 2025

They do not seem to have come from donations from the Egyptians (for back pay?) when they left because they were ALL ALIKE. Perhaps they had been gifts from brother Joseph since he likely gave his father and brothers all the same gifs.

By the way, the total value of all the donations (minus the animals) would be

  • -$7620 USD total value of silver in 2025
  • -$146,400 USD total value in gold in 2025
  • $154,020 USD TOTAL VALUE IN 2025

March 25 ~ Things in the Bible not really in the Bible…and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Joseph, who saved the Egyptians from starvation through 7 years of famine, enjoyed high status as second in power under Pharaoh the rest of his life.

Genesis 50:22-25  –  Genesis 47:18-19  –   Genesis 15:13-14  –  Genesis 50:4-6  –  Genesis 48:21

Fact of the Day

No!  Joseph lived long enough to see the third generation of his descendants. His brothers’ families were slaves in Egypt 400 years. What happened? (ALL DATES BELOW BASED ON WIKIPEDIA’S LIST OF PHARAOHS)

  • BIAU was reigning when Joseph arrived at age 17
AI reigned 24 years (Joseph age 21-45)

Joseph was age 44 when famine ended when Pharaoh owned everything and had turned the Egyptians into his slaves.

  • INI reigned 2 years  Joseph age 46-48)
SEWADJTU reigned 3 years (Joseph age 48-51)
INED reigned 3 years (Joseph age 52-55)
HORI reigned 5 years ( Joseph age 55-60.

IT SEEMS THERE WAS UTTER CHAOS AND REVOLTS FROM THE SLAVE CITIZENS AFTER BIAU DIED.  After Hori died, there were 14 years of Pharaoh’s that archaeologists have not even found the names of.

Moses freed the slaves around 1275 BC.  Counting back 400 years is 1675, 5 years after Pharaoh died who had made all the Egyptians his slaves. Joseph age 48 when Israelite slavery began)

Now it was payback time. The people must have hated both that Pharaoh and Joseph for making them Pharaoh’s slaves as a result of the famine. But still Joseph was a prince.

JOSEPH WAS AGE 57 WHEN HIS FATHER DIED BUT COULD NOT SPEAK TO PHARAOH DIRECTLY.  He spoke to someone in Pharaoh’s household and asked them to ask Pharaoh to let Joseph go back to Canaan to bury his father, with a promise to return (Genesis 50:4-6).

JOSEPH WAS AGE 48 WHEN HIS BROTHERS’ FAMILIES BECAME SLAVES.

JOSEPH WAS 57 WHEN FATHER JACOB/ISRAEL DIED. He told Joseph, “I am about to die, but God will be with you and take you back to the land of your fathers.”

WHEN JOSEPH DIED he told his brothers “God will surely come to your aid and then you must carry my bones up from this place.”

Both Joseph and his father were embalmed, so Joseph still was treated as a prince, perhaps still living in his fine estate, but a minor prince with little or no power by the time of his death.

  • Father Jacob died at age 147 (Gen. 47:28).
  •  Joseph died at age 110 (Genesis 50:22)
  • Moses died at age 120 (Deuteronomy 34:7).
  •  AVG AGE 126 years.

They were there 3-1/2 generations (430 years).  Joseph lived to see 3 generations (Genesis 50:22-23)

March 23 ~ Things in the Bible not really in the Bible…and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

In the story of “THE PRODIGAL SON”, the older brother should have forgiven his younger and lazy brother who finally came home.  And he should have forgiven their father for giving a party for his returned brother, even though their father never gave the hard-working older brother a party.

Luke 15:11-14 – Luke 15:22-25 – Luke 15:30-32

Fact of the Day

No!   It was much more than that.  It was jealousy, greed, and a desire for all or nothing.  As the oldest son, he was going to inherit their father’s entire estate (see v. 31), yet he resented one little party given to his brother.  Also, their father thought his youngest was dead; the older one acted as though he wished his brother was dead. This was a lesson in forgiveness on the part of everyone!

Oops of the Day

Zebedee, the father of James and John was betrayed by Jesus when he recruited his sons and also Peter, Andrew, his fishing partners so that his fishing business would fail.

Luke 5:4-11

Fact of the Day

No!  Just before recruiting them, Jesus performed a miracle.   They caught so many fish when fish weren’t supposed to be feeding that their nets were about to break.  Was that a message to Zebedee, the owner, that his fishing business will do fine?

Oops of the Day

Joseph, Jesus’ step-father, died after Jesus was 12 but while Jesus was still a child.

Luke 4:14-22  –   John 6:42  –  John 19:25-27

Fact of the Day

No! When he returned to Nazareth and preached there, the people said, “IS (present tense) this not Joseph’s son?”.  (Joseph must have died some time during the end of Jesus’ ministry because he made arrangements for his mother to live with John.)

March 20 ~ Things in the Bible not really in the Bible…and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

Jesus first went to the temple when he was 12 and had celebrated his bar-mitzva.

Luke 2:31-42  –  Matthew 2:19-23

Fact of the Day

No!  ! Bar-Mitzva was first recorded in history in the 13th century in France. Jesus’ parents went to the temple every year. The Bible says so.  The reason they took Jesus at age twelve more likely was that cruel King Archaelaeus was so mean (he had killed 3000 in the temple when Jesus was 11), he was banished to Gaul by Caesar. THEN, it was safe to take Jesus to Jerusalem.

MATTHEW 2:19-23 – After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”
“So Joseph took the child [Jesus] and his mother and went to the land of Israel.  But when he heard that ARCHAELAEUS was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was AFRAID to go there. Having been WARNED in a dream, he withdrew to the district far-north[province] of Galilee, and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth.”

Surprise of the Day

When baby Jesus was presented at the temple by his parents,  Prophetess Anna was AGE 84 or more and had lived at the temple all but 7 of her adult years.

Luke 2:36-37

Fact of the Day

Anna lived through these attacks on the temple and Jerusalem while living there in one of its apartments:

  • BC 63 – Pompey besieged Jerusalem and entered the temple.
  • BC 54 – Crassus looted the temple of all its gold.
  • BC 40 – When Herod was made King, Jerusalem closed its gates, so he attacked through the temple.

Oops of the Day

The angel chorus sang about Jesus’ birth to the shepherds.

Luke 3:13  –  Revelation 5:9-12  –  Revelation 14:3  –  Revelation 15:3  –  Revelation 16:5

Fact of the Day

No!  Angels do not sing.  A multitude of the heavenly host (angels) praised God “saying” glory to God. Later seven angels “said” the song of Moses and the Lamb. The third angel “said “the Lamb was righteous.   People get to sing.

March 14 ~ Things in the Bible not really in the Bible…and a few surprises

Oops of the Day

King David was a shepherd, Jesus called himself the Good Shepherd. Therefore, the shepherds the angels appeared to were respectable men.

Luke 2:8-20  –  Genesis 46:33-34

Fact of the Day

No!  Shepherds were despised in many places, including in Egypt where Joseph warned his father not to tell Pharaoh he was a shepherd.  The Jewish Talmud forbade shepherds from being witnesses.  Further, no help was to be given to heathens or shepherds.
