Bethlehem at last. For the pointless census. The bus drives away.

”Just sit here, Mary. I’ll find a phone and line up the hotel for us.”

Half an hour later, Joseph turns away from the pay phone and walks toward his young wife. She’s moved from the curb to a bench. She’s lying down with their tote bag under her head. She looks so little and helpless.

A few minutes later, the couple with the bundle in their tote, and a bundle in Mary’s little womb, leave the bus depot. The sun is about down. They begin to walk. Walk the streets. They are homeless….
