Scripture for Tuesday, May 9 (5/9)

The scripture for today, May 9 (5/9), is Matthew 5:9 as found in the Old Testament of the Bible:

00-cover-kindle-medium-new“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the sons of God.”

Jesus, the only begotten Son of God (Christians are adopted sons) was a peacemaker. He came to earth to help us make peace with God. After all, “all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God” (Romans 3:23). It only takes one sin to be a sinner. And God cannot dwell with sin. What was the solution?

Romans 6:23 says the wages we collect for sinning is death. In Old Testament times, God let people kill a perfect animal in their place. But they kept having to do it. Finally, Jesus came to earth and lived that perfect life that is impossible for us to live as the perfect Lamb of God. Then he allowed himself to take our punishment for our (not his) sins and be killed in our place (collected the wages we earn). His was the final sacrifice. Now, by following Jesus, God adopts us and makes us his children. Jesus was a peacemaker between God and man.

You, too, can be a peacemaker. You can help people be at peace with themselves. You can help them be at peace with each other. And you can help them be at peace with God. Thereby, you can share in what God’s begotten Son was ~ a peacemaker.

Do some peacemaking today.

Scripture for Thursday, May 4 (5/4)

The scripture for today, May 4 (5/4), is 1st Peter 5:4 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

“And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.”

The word “shepherd” here is the same as elder, pastor or presbyter. Many denominations appoint someone to be the head of their religion at their world headquarters. He goes by different titles ~ bishop, high priest, father, papa, president. Their headquarters may be a small office or an entire complex. From here the head meets regularly with others to make decisions for their denomination.

Here is a unique thought: Let us set this system aside and let Jesus be the only head, and let the world headquarters be in heaven! We do not have to rely on the decisions of men, but on the decisions of God the Son who loved us so much that he became human for awhile so he could die for us. We don’t even need a creed, because if it is less than the Bible it isn’t enough, if it is more than the Bible it is too much, and if it is the same as the Bible why have it?

No more divisiveness. No more denominationalism. Just one united church of Christ with its divine founder as our sole leader, and his divine words as our sole creed. This will never fade away. How sublime the thought!

Scripture for Tuesday, May 2 (5/2)

The scripture for today, May 2 (5/2), is Micah 5:2 as found in the Old Testament of the Bible:

0000-BK 1-StarSong-Cover-new-Medium“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”

This amazing scripture prophecies where the “ruler…from ancient times” will be born. It gives the exact city Jesus (who had been in heaven before his human birth) would be born in, written seven centuries before his birth.

The Bible is the only religious book in the world with built-in proofs that it is of divine origin. Prophecies of many events in the life of Christ flow throughout the Old Testament. He wasn’t just a prophet, he wasn’t just a good man, he wasn’t a fraud.

Thank God, He thought of everything to help us believe Jesus was, indeed, the Son of God!

Scripture for Sunday, April 30 (4/30)

The scripture for today, April 30 (4/30), is Ephesians 4:30f as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

0-Mefiboset-KINDLE Medium“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage, and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.”

Do we think that God has no choice but to let us into heaven because we do not steal, cheat or murder? Think again.

There’s more to it than that; it’s called attitude. Are we bitter about anything? Do we have a problem with bitterness, rage or anger? Do we enjoy a good mental or physical brawl? Do we slander people who have done us wrong? Do we harbor grudges year after year?

The average person does not have trouble with bad actions. The big problem is with bad attitudes–Satan’s attitudes. Let go of them. God will take care of the problems. Let go of those you consider your enemies and wish for them a better life. God will deal with them. Let go of what could have been but never happened. God has something better for you.

Do not grieve the Holy Spirit. Do not grieve yourself. Live in sweet peace. Gain heaven.

Scripture for Sunday, April 23 (4/23)

The scripture for today, April 23, is Mark 4:23 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

worship-the-first-century-way-cover-kindle“If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Some of us read a passage in the Bible and say, “I know it says that, but it doesn’t mean that.”  We just don’t want to hear it.

It’s hard to admit we are wrong, isn’t it? It’s human nature. And in the realm of religion, it is even harder because we’re talking about our eternal soul. So reading that we’re supposed to be doing or not doing something that we’ve never followed before is like being on a bridge over a roaring river, and suddenly realizing the bridge is breaking and we are not as safe as we thought we were.  Let us take our human egos out of the way.

Let’s say, for example, you have a wood or cooking project. If you leave a major step out, it results in your creation not turning out right. You might turn a blind eye to the correct way, give up and throw your creation away so that you never have the joy of whatever you were creating. Or you may go back and check what you have done until you find your mistake, are glad you found the mistake, see it with seeing eyes, correct it, and then have the joy of your creation.

Let us not fight God like spiritual teenagers trying to boss their parents. We are God’s creation. He is just trying to help us. Instead of spiritual blindness and deafness, let us have eyes that truly see, and ears that truly hear the Word of God.

Scripture for Saturday, April 22 (4/22)

The scripture for today, April 22, is Proverbs 4:22 as found in the Old Testament of the Bible:

Clouds in blue sky“…for they [my words] are life to those who find them and health to a man’s whole body.”

Nearly everyone with a Bible picks it up at some time or another and reads something out of it. But random reading is like picking up a novel and randomly reading a few passages now and then. The passage itself may be beautiful, but does not have a lot of meaning without knowing what came before and after that passage in the novel.

It is the same with God’s Word. Read the entire Bible. Perhaps you can read a chapter a day. Or, if you want to read it through in a year, you can count the total number of pages in your Bible, divide by 365, and read that number of pages each day. This way you will know all the things that occurred before and after your favorite scriptures. Then they will take on new meaning for your life.

Proverbs even says this adds to your health. Do you suffer from any physical problems caused by anxiety? A lot of physical problems are. This is yet another reason to know the Word of God.

How amazing!

Scripture for Thursday, April 20 (4/20)

The scripture for today, April 20, is 1st John 4:20 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

00-COVER-KINDLE“If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.”

Jealousy and hatred are very much akin. Are there people you are jealous of? Do they have a position you want, and so you say and do things to undermine their character or work, in order to get their position? Do you have a position you love, and there is a new person who could perform better, so you undermine that person’s ability in order to protect your position?

God eliminates jealousy this way: What you accomplish in public isn’t as important to him as what you accomplish in private. Jesus said those who receive praise by people already have their reward, so will not be praised by God (Matthew 6:1-5, 16-18). As much as it goes against human nature, prefer to do your good deeds in private, and God will reward you openly.

Scripture for Wednesday, April 19 (4/19)

The scripture for today, April 19, is 1st Corinthians 4:19a as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

Oldoldstory-COVER-KINDLE“But I will come to you very soon if the Lord is willing.”

God knows each step you take through life. He knows all the roads you take in each phase of your life, and what is awaiting you at the other end. The road you are on today may lead you to where you do not want to be. But being unable to see the future, you do not always know that.

The writer of the above scripture was telling his friends he was coming to see them soon “if the Lord is willing.” Sometimes a decision seems so right. But there may be danger on the way. Or there may be a different road to take leading you to somewhere even better.

Thank God, he does not say yes to all of our prayers. Try to remember, when you ask God for things, to add “Your will be done”. His will is for you to have the best life possible.

Scripture for Monday, April 17 (4/17)

The scripture for today, April 17, is Mark 4:17 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

00-Heroes-Alone-COVER-KINDLE“But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the Word, they quickly fall away.”

We may be mentally prepared for persecution out in the world. But what about persecution among our friends who we attend worship with all the time? They can turn on us too. Perhaps we have discovered a new truth and we’re trying to get members of our congregation to believe it. If they get the feeling we are trying to prove them wrong and make them look bad, they will turn on you much like people do a “whistleblower” in the business world.

On whose side will you stand? Your friends’ so you can continue to be friends with them, or God’s? It’s easy to let things slide and pretend that new truth no longer exists so we can keep our friends. How deep are our roots? Who shall we worship? Our friends or God? What is more important? Our friends or our eternity?

Scripture for Sunday, April 16 (4/16)

The scripture for today, April 16, is Hebrews 4:16 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

0-BK 7-ShadowOfDeath-Cover-new-Medium“Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Anyone who has lived very long has committed some sin they hope no one ever finds out about. Some people have committed many such sins. Sometimes because of that one “big” sin or the constant repetition of a particular “big” sin, people punish themselves by putting words in God’s mouth. They say, “God could never forgive me for that.” Perhaps you can never forgive yourself, but God is greater than you.

Jesus told Peter we must forgive our brothers 70 times 7. If kept literally, that would mean we’d have to forgive the same sin 490 times. Actually, it is figurative for forgiving all the time. 1st Corinthians 13, the “love chapter” of the Bible, says, “Love…keeps no record of wrongs.”

Let us not only forgive others; let us also help people who cannot forgive themselves. God is the God of mercy.
