Surprise of the Day
How did the wise men around Persia (today’s Iran) figure out what the star meant and where to go?
Matthew 2:2 – Daniel 9:1 &24ff – Daniel chapters 10 & 11 – Daniel 12:3

Fact of the Day
In short, pagans at that time believed a new star meant a new god had been born. They probably investigated the writings of all major religions of their day to find a meaning to that star – Buddhism, Hinduism, Shamanism, Zoroastroism, etc. Finally, they must have investigated the Jewish holy writings. The book of Jeremiah was stored in Babylon and the Persians had access to it. So, surely Daniel – advisor to at least four kings over 50 years – left his writings behind along with Jeremiah’s in the Persian archives. The wisemen could have read (1) the prophecies and the timeline of the Messiah coming exactly 490 years after the order to rebuild Jerusalem, (2) the prophecies of world conquerors – Persia, Greece, Rome, and (3) reference to wise men and righteous stars – all found just in the book of Daniel.
